LUDUS: REDUX
A two-channel video installation that culminates research into the social aspects of play, video games, and militarization.
The concept of play is explored through the lens of the proposed theory of 'Play-as-Preparation', which suggests that play evolved as a means for advanced life forms to simulate conflicts in a safe environment, thereby preparing them for challenges later in life.
Technological advancements in society have allowed humans to digitally simulate this conflict simulation—a meta-simulation we know as video games.
The work explores how modern technology has altered the way in which we play and how Western militaries have weaved these newer technologies into almost every facet of their operations, from recruiting and training to combat.
The film critiques the concept of militarized reappropriation by reappropriating itself, using various forms of publicly available media sourced from the internet, including archival footage, movies, documentaries, and military promotional material.

We invite Jamie Shilvock to give a talk about his research for project Ludux: Redux at our Meta Morphosis weekender on the 14th December.
As an artist who works within the medium of New Media, Jamie’s work investigates how humans interact with and are influenced by technology in both philosophical and practical ways. Drawing from experience working in software development across various industries, he has a perspective that combines technical insight with cultural critique to explore how technology shapes our world.
Ludus: Redux, a two-channel video installation, builds upon the work of filmmakers such as Harun Farocki and Hito Steyerl. It explores why humans play and how the advancements in technology of the last 100 years have led to a simulation of play. These concepts of simulation and play are explored further by looking into how Western militaries use esports and video games as a recruitment strategy and use modern gaming engines to simulate and assist warfare.

Long live @corsica.studios man. My 2nd home from when i first moved to london a decade ago. This space defined my late adolescence/early adulthood and helped shape who I am today.
I’ve been to clubs all over the world and this has always been my favourite, for anyone who’s visited it’s easy to understand why.
In a time where this city’s spaces that prioritise and showcase electronic and experimental music are all being culled, I can’t help but mourn the fact it is closing, but the memories i have here will overshadow any sorrow.
