Bukit Nanas. A place I often passed by without ever realising it was Bukit Nanas. It wasn’t until a few weeks ago, when I finally visited, that I realised even KL Tower is actually located in Bukit Nanas.
I walked along the road by St. John’s Cathedral and began to notice the many Christian establishments along the way, including Magnificat (Community Centre), Fatima Kindergarten (Old Former Cathedral), SK St. John 1 & 2, St. John’s Institution, Convent Bukit Nanas, and the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur (Cardijn House).
As a non-Christian Malaysian, I felt genuinely amazed by the diversity of our country.
I also randomly came across the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve tunnel, located near the Bukit Nanas monorail station.
To be honest, Bukit Nanas is filled with remarkable history!

Pasar. Tiada tempat untuk membeli sayur, buahan dan segala bahan masakan yang benar-benar segar dan berkualiti selain pasar.
Seorang sahabat @husainighazali pernah menulis sajak berikut:
Grocery store berlakon jadi kampung
kumasuki tempat ini
terasa rapat jarak desa dan kota
yang kusentuh
mangga menyala, rambutan menguning
serai bersurai, lengkuas berplastik
semuanya dikumpul dingin
hingga luput bau kampung
Begitulah rasanya setiap kali saya bertandang ke pasaraya yang bagai cendawan tumbuh selepas hujan. Bersih, teratur tetapi tetapi terasa kekurangannya berbanding pasar.
Setiap ramuan bukan sekadar bahan. Ia adalah ingatan. Ia adalah cara hidup. Biarlah makanan menjadi ubatmu dan ubat menjadi makananmu.

I came to know Brickfields through my brother. I was around 13 then, living in Rawang and Brickfields was just a distant name to me. In 2021, I went there for the first time with a simple purpose. A job interview at a government agency. I didn’t get it.
But that morning, my brother took me for breakfast at a small Indian stall in Brickfields. And somehow, that was where it all began. The colours. The sounds. The constant movement of people and life.
I found myself drawn to Brickfields without really understanding why. Then, in 2023 things came full circle. I was offered a job there, along Jalan Sultan Abdul Samad. For two years, Brickfields became part of my daily life. And in that time, I began to notice something I hadn’t before.
The blind community. I would see them crossing busy streets on their own. Heading to work at massage centres and reflexology shops. Climbing narrow staircases tucked between rows of shops. Sitting at nearby stalls, sharing meals, living their routines.
They were not hidden. They were part of the rhythm of the place. And yet, I never stopped to ask why Brickfields seemed to be a centre for the blind community. Why here and not elsewhere in Kuala Lumpur? Was it because the Malaysian Association for the Blind was located there? Maybe.
But I have always been someone who observes. So the question stayed with me.
Until last year.
I found my answer through the writing of a blind author, Abang Rosli Ibrahim in @jurnalsvara . His words gave shape to something I had only been quietly noticing. And now, every time I step into Brickfields, I don’t just see the colours anymore.
I remember his story.
