“We have to know where we’re coming from and where we’re going - if we don’t know where we’re going, when we get there, we won’t know where we are”, Jay Douglas
@jaydouglasmusic and us have been on this journey for 5 years, but this journey is over 5 decades long – from the West Indian Domestic Scheme, to the beginning of Caribana, to the building of the Toronto sound, to claiming our space & place, to playing it loud and proud – this nomination is a powerful recognition and acknowledgement of our stories from the Caribbean diaspora in Canada, and the life, journey and undeniable musical and cultural contributions of Jay Douglas (pictured R), Jackie Richardson (pictured L), and the many Black and Jamaican artists who immigrated here to this new land, forever changing the cultural landscape that is Canada.
Thank you to our Jamaican community in Canada, the amazing team at
@tvodocs , the funders, and our amazing team of collaborators that believed in these stories.
There are many more stories to be told and many more people to celebrate – remember these names, celebrate them, and the many legacies of Jamaican-Canadians: Everton Pablo Paul, Jackie Mittoo, Lillian Allen, Carlene Davis-Cowan, Barry Malcolm, Jo Jo Bennett, Wayne McGhie, Bob & Wisdom, Stranger Cole, Johnny Osbourne, Nana McLean, Leroy Sibbles, Roy and Yvonne Panton, Alton Ellis, Noel Ellis, Eddie Spencer, The Mighty Pope, Joe Isaacs, Jerry Brown, King Culture, Lloyd Delpratt, Willi Williams, Adrian Miller, Lord Tanamo, Carol Brown, R Zee Jackson, Glen Ricketts, Carl Mullings…
