Hey Theatre Fam! Oh yeahā¦Iām so excited to reveal the first cover for the Spring issue of People of Theatre - The Magazine.
This one had to be āDeep Azureā, written by the late Chadwick Boseman and on at Sam Wanamaker Playhouse (The Globe) right now.
ā¼ļøI meanā¦look at lead actors Selina Jones and Jayden Elijah and tell me theyāre not completely magnetic, fierce, and heartbreakingly present š„
Boseman was inspired by the death of Prince Jones, his friend and fellow Howard University student, killed by police in Virginia in 2000. The play follows Azure, a young Black woman grieving her fiancĆ©, Deep, after heās killed by a police officer.
šInside the magazine, I also speak to director Tristan Fynn-Aiduenu (yes, the one many of you know from āFor Black Boysā). He talks about why this play matters, and about Bosemanās lyrical craft, shaping a theatrical language rooted in hip hop verse.
Itās rare and necessary to see Black writing revived on its own unapologetic terms, in the story and in the form.
ā¼ļøThe Spring issue of the print magazine lands on subscribersā doorsteps at the end of the month.
If you havenāt joined yet, you can subscribe via the link in bio.
