Before there was @duettstx there was #Goodtimecharlies at Mulberry and Broadway in San Antonio. It was my hangout of choice from 1984 until we moved to Katy in 2000 and I still went back most of the times we were in SA. Thanks Millard and all the waitresses through the years. Is it possible to get my coffee cup back?

Today marks 50 years since I saw @therollingstones for the first time. It was at the old Hemisphere Arena in San Antonio and was the show that started my love of live music. It was the first tour with @ronniewood so for me he’s always been a Stone. This in no way downplays the contributions of #brianjones or #micktaylor. For me the best shows ever were the Dallas and Houston shows in 1989 after spending most of the decade thinking they were done touring. It was also the last time I saw @bill_wyman_official play. I miss seeing @thisischarliewatts sit there stoically keeping everything in time. @mickjagger and @officialkeef are rock and roll (and country, disco and above all the blues). They’ve been made the last 50 years of music fun for me, and led me in musical directions (as a fan, I can’t sing or play a note) I never thought I’d go. Thanks to the sidemen and sidewomen I’ve seen play live with them. They have made the experience complete. #IanStewart #bobbykeys #billypreston #olliebrown #ianmclagan #erniewatts @bernardfowler @l.i.s.a.f.i.s.c.h.e.r @chuck_leavell @officialblondiechaplin @timriesofficial @karldensonstinyuniverse @materialist12 @sashaallenmusic @iamchanelhaynes And the two guys that filled the biggest shoes @darryljonesbassist (who’s been playing with the band longer than Bill did) @jayveerecords (Steve Jordan) (who was a hell of an x-pensive wino)

I’ve seen @georgestrait @stevierayvaughanofficial at @cheathamstreetAnd I’ve seen @robertearlkeen1 and @crosscanadianragweed25 / @departed_music at a jillion places and I’ve seen the @therollingstones 24 times. But nothing has beaten seeing @silverada at @duettstx a mile and half from my house! What a great night!! Thank you @velvetcontroversy @ryanquiet for making it all happen. Sorry @caleb_allemand for worrying that the bar would break (literally). Thanks @rileyynowak @gigimaulone & @moonfallmama for being the best bartenders in the land! What a great night!

Larry Roberson passed away Monday night after a fight with cancer. Larry was one of my heroes. A drummer who at one time or another played with almost all the Texas greats. He was the sort of man who could play his drums at a honky tonk on Saturday night and still be there to teach Sunday School on Sunday morning. When Kristin and I got married in 1997 he put together a band for the reception. When it was time to pay him he said “no this is my gift to you” I don’t know if he paid the other guys out of his pocket or not. He wouldn’t say and I quit asking. I’ll never forget the grin on his face as the band launched into “Start Me Up” as we left the reception. But that doesn’t touch the best of who he was. In 1988 TBC did camp at the coast for the second year. Charles Sheffield’s wife of 60+ years had passed away that spring. Using condos for cabins meant two people ended up sharing a king sized bed. Somewhere in the night Mr. Sheffield reached over in his sleep, like he had for 60 plus years, and held Larry’s hand. As any of us would be Larry said he was at first shocked. Then he realized that it wouldn’t do anything other than embarrass Mr. Sheffield. “So I just laid there all night and let him hold my hand” I can’t really believe he is gone from this earth. I know that heaven has picked up one really cool drummer.

So this happened yesterday! @duettstx opened after 2 1/2 years of painstaking renovations to this grand old building. This is the best thing to happen to Martindale since @half_an_enchilada and @annelizabethroth opened @martindalerivercafe ! Don and I may or may not have snuck in so we could watch the first customers roll in after waiting in a line halfway to Martindale dam. @ryanquiet and @velvetcontroversy well done and we’re proud of you. @maurynca thanks for believing. @nunispramps thanks for those first official drinks. And Brooks we sure did miss you more than normal yesterday

Well @twsafari that was 20! No one does this alone or on their own strength. I want to thank the 37 men and two ladies that have helped me to the finish as well as the 13 Team Captains. Paddlers John-Mark Harras (4) Brandon Stafford (4) Michael Vandeveer (4) John DuPont (3) Shawn Boyett (3) Marty Bohanan (2)Chris Paddack (2) Bill “Polecat” Stafford (2) Jonathan Yonley (2) Jonathan Zeek (2) Jim Pye (2) Kristin Daniel (2) Tim Curry (2) Chris Stevenson (1) Ron Popp (1) Tom Goynes (1) Denby Snell (1) Joe Lowrey (1) Larry Coffey (1) Chuck Stewart (1) Charlie Stewart (1) Richard Miller (1) Jeremiah Jackson (1) Tommy Yonley (1) Tim Rask (1) Pat Petrisky (1) Tim Olsen (1) John Maika (1) Andres Cobb (1) Sammy Prochaska (1) Steve Bis (1) Andrew Condie (1) Ian Rolls (1) Gaston Jones (1) Clay Wyatt (1) Chris Issendorf (1) Nate Tart (1) Mike Tecci (1) Morgan Kohut (1) Richard Zambrana (1). The TCs Kristin Daniel (11) Jim Graham (3) Jim Daniel (2) Carolyn Popp (1) Joe Bailey (1) Kay Coffey (1) Gene “3 Dots” Carlisle (1) Heather Stafford (1) Brandon Hartmann (1) Jill Wyatt (1) Tom Vandeveer (1) Jessie Hazelwood (1) Kassy Daniel (1) and the dozens who helped that weren’t listed as TCs through the years, especially Mom. Board Members through the years that make sure the race happens; Tom Goynes, R-Square, Red Motley, Troy Swift, Mike Spencer, Pat Petrisky, Phil Bowden, Jerry Cochran, Allen Spelce, Bob Spain, and Harvey Babb. Thanks to the hundreds of volunteers through the years. It’s obvious by the count of Paddlers and TCs that my numero uno Teammate has been @kristind167 who continues to let me play (and get all of you registered). Thanks @kassydcoyote for spending a big chunk of your life on the river bank watching dad play. I’m sure I’ve forgotten someone I appreciate you all. Troy Swift told me, when I asked what it took to do this race, “It takes an overwhelming desire to hurt yourself.” I have unfortunately lived up to that! I didn’t burden the team members from the years that were DNFs with credit since those failures were mine alone. I love this race but most of all I love and appreciate everyone involved.
