It’s been one heck of a year so far for JCT! I’ve had the opportunity to capture so many amazing moments in the 9 months since my return to Florida! Milestone moments, rare sports moments, exotic vehicles and oh so many firsts!
While the year isn’t over yet, this song has been really trending and allowed me to do some digging between all of my projects this year to reminisce on what a wild ride it’s been! While surprise engagements can be incredibly high stress due to the variables, I love the fun of the mystery and secrecy.
Rarely do things go exactly to plan but I can honestly say that this one went amazingly despite one very aloof child 🤣💙

I don’t know much about kids….
I’m the youngest of my family and I don’t have any nieces and nephews… 🐣
And until my friends forced me, I didn’t hold infants until the age of 24…
What I do know is this, kids hate being forced to dress a certain way, being told to stare at a camera and take direction from strangers…
So the trick is, let them be kids, let them have fun, give them direction but only ask something of them once you’ve made an attempt to get to know them.
One thing a family photographer said that stuck with me was, “Get on their level.” Which I’ve interpreted to not only physically but emotionally.
I make it a point whenever I photograph a family to place my focus on the child. Mom and dad know the drill and don’t need any special treatment.
If the kid leaves the session thinking, “that wasn’t so bad” or even, “I had fun.” Then I’ve done my job, camera reads comfort and that’s one of the best challenges we get to face as documentarians.
