COCO is paid in community 😭 I occasionally get a little sentimental on social media and maybe it’s because of the incredibly difficult year. But the beauty in challenges is the moments that fill you with unbelievable admiration and joy. You cannot appreciate the highs until you have experienced the lows. I have found those moments in COCO. I’d forgotten how wonderfully humbling it is to feel curiously seen. A few weeks ago, I was about 90% sure I was moving back to Texas. Mostly for financial reasons, missing my Texas peeps, and honestly, I struggled with belonging in Denver. I had some connections but due to the circumstances of everyday life, looking different in most rooms, or from myself or others, not much really stuck. The u-haul was booked and I was planning my cross-states move, but I still ended up at a couple of COCO events. And every time I walked away from an event, I kept wanting to run back. To witness the magic of talented creatives dropping their ego and collaborating for the sake of art and connection. That’s all thanks to @_paularay , an extraordinary visionary who just wants to create safe spaces where people can be held and inspired. Who values the artists, not just the art. And @cocoeventgroup has done just that alongside @departmentdenver . I believe that’s rare to find these days. After multiple reoccurring existential crises and crash out calls with my besties (lol ty besties), I canceled the u-haul and decided to stay. I wanted to be a part of building a truly diverse community of different colors, creative mediums, backgrounds, and lifestyles. So others can feel safe and valued in a world that pressures you to stay competitive and small, like COCO does for me. Community is difficult to find but it’s worth it when you show up and put in the effort. A friend of mine has this beautiful saying: “there’s a universe in everyone’s eyes.” So say hi to a stranger and stay curious about those in your life. I’m just starting to remind myself how to. especially after covid, people are feeling more disconnected and lonelier than ever. yet we’re afraid to let ourselves be seen. we’re afraid to let ourselves be known and that makes connection so much harder. how can we make belonging feel like a birthright instead of something you have to earn? that’s not a question that can be answered easily. so i’m sitting down with friends and strangers to hear their perspective on community. to investigate what makes people feel safe enough to connect and open up. to understand what we can do to create safer communities. maybe we can find ways to make connection feel easier instead of terrifying. so follow along and live inside these questions with me :) #community #connection #belonging #authenticity #communitybuilding
