So glad I caught @janisstemmermann exhibitiion @NWCC during the Mad River Festival. In response to the festival theme of resistance, Stemmerman offered her text-based prints, carvings, sculpture and textiles. A purity of form and spirit prevailed.

Installation view of upcoming solo exhibition @ctstatenorthwestern Part of the colleges annual literary Mad River Fest, this years theme “Resilience”. Reception and artist talk April 8. Janis Stemmermann The Gallery at Founders Hall CT State Northwestern Community College Winsted, CT March 23 – April 10, 2026 Reception: April 8, 4–5 pm Artist Talk: April 8, 5:30 pm Included in the exhibition are a selection works from the early 1990s, when I began incorporating text into sculpture. Words were painted, carved, printed, and placed to guide how you move through and experience each piece. The texts draw from The Passion by Jeanette Winterson—a novel set during the Napoleonic Wars whose poetic language uses symbolic imagery exploring love, identity, and fate. These early works shaped Note to Self (1993) 2024–2025, bringing the matrix and the print together as a single work. For the first time, I included my own writing—a poetic note beside a 1993 sketch, revealing the thoughts of my younger self. In Photo 1 right: Top Horn, 1992, wood and Tempera. Left: Note to Self (1993), Domesticity 2024-2025 wood, ink, unglazed ceramic, cotton muslin, cotton batting and thread Photo 2: text transcription Top Horn, 1992 Photo 3: Top Horn studio 1992
