There is a lot of night ext scenes in the ep2. It’s no secret how challenging night scenes can be in remote places. There are almost no light sources present in the woods and fields at night except the moon and fire and practicals like torches. I always talk to director and show-runner and ask them to give at least one of the characters a torch, put one lonely lantern somewhere or in the bridge case i asked production designer to add lamps to the bridge. for moon and general fill we used 3 hmi helio balloon lights, each 4.5m in diameter, and one 18k arrimax far away to light the far forest hill. smaller led lights were used in the scene and of course tungsten bridge lanterns.
Interesting fact - due to actor availability and season limitations we had to shoot many days interiors where there is supposed to be winter in the window, but it was still beginning of October. we created a huge banners 18x6m and placed them outside. We basically created a studio setup in real life. including constant lighting. this was the first time for me to do that and a great new experience. worked fantastically well.
p.s. we also had to do it the other way around :) shoot autumn in december in full scale winter.

One of the richest and most awesome episodes. Filled with cool mysterious creatures and spirits.
Also its fascinating remembering that shooting took a period from end of summer to mid december. When we begun in shorts and ended up in -18 and a meter snow :))

First shot is a cu of @aserina where raindrops start to drop on her face. This was a metaphor. She is betrayed by the world and world cries.
In this sequence there are some burning scenes. We used special sfx/props master doll which was made to look as out @aleksey_rozin . Our art dep built a replica of basement where the body was dropped and burned. It was made outdoors next to the house location. The set was built with three walls and a cieling and for fire safety reasons one wall had to be left open.
I used a lensbaby on alexa lf and movi gimbal in the forest flashback sequence. The challange was to keep the boy in focus as he was running and there is no way to put ffocus on lensbaby. But in about 4 takes we managed to keep constant distance and got the shot.
And of course one of my fav - house burning in the rural remote village. Two helium ballons werr used left and roght of the frame. One was made into moon and the other one was painted out by cgi. The fun part is that it was supposed to be a slow arson type fire… but the sfx guys as they often do - overdid it.. 🙈 there was a huge bang thet the wooden log roof jumped up - no kidding, all the widows and doors were smashed out. Nobody got hurt during this though! Safety first. Thes sequence was shot with 3 cameras and dji inspire x7.

The full moon in the wide show is cgi to cover a helium baloon :) it is always challenging to light wast remote open spaces where you have no natural light sources like street lights, shop windows in the towns. We were using from one to three helium hmi baloons.
Another challange when shooting in open spaces and wide wide shots is not damaging the location with crew footsteps. Of course cgi helps, but they can only do so much, so it was a real problem when shooting outside in the field in a meter deep snow.

The first shot of the episode was show on a frozen river and i wanted a long dolly in on a fisherman. Challange of using a steadicam or gimbal with sledges is that would leave trails after the first try. I used dji inspire x7 instead. Worked very well flying 40cm from ice covered river.
In all of Egors vision scenes i used good amount of vaseline on a clear 4x4 for dreamy effect.

In some shots you will notice that background and foreground is in focus. I used split diopters in very specific scenes and only in the underworld life. It is a very specific and unnatural yet interesting effect.
I also used #cinefade vari ND filter to achieve change from deep to shallow depth of field or reverse when main characters enters into his visions. A new technique for me but one that im sure gonna be using again. A very powerful yet subtle tool to guide a viewer and create an emotion.
Main Lighting in the forest was achieved by one large hmi helium baloon above the trees 20-30m high. The use of cranes or cherrypickers was not an option due to geographic location.
Worked great for a general soft keylight, only problems were wind… as the shadows started to move like clock :) but because it is a vision/dream scene it even worked as an effect.
