The Avon & Kennet Bowl is an 18-sided statement piece. An Octadecagon presentation bowl crafted from baked ripple sycamore and reclaimed oak salvaged from an Avon & Kennet canal lock gate. The sycamore has been baked to 210°C, transforming its natural creamy white into rich caramel and toasted golden tones through the caramelisation of the timber’s natural sugars. This extra special variety also displays natural ripple chatoyancy, a rare shimmering optical effect that creates movement and depth across the surface as the light shifts. The reclaimed oak tells an equally remarkable story. Decades of contact with the lock gate’s ironmongery caused a natural reaction with the oak’s tannins, producing dramatic black and blue staining deep within the grain. Entirely natural. Entirely unrepeatable. Every facet reveals a different contrast of tone, texture and reflection, balancing precision geometry with the raw unpredictability of the material itself. Available for purchase. Can ship worldwide. Let me know if you’re interested.

An Offering — an exhibition for the senses. Timber, touch, and the quiet presence of cedar. New work emerging from the studio, alongside a few seasoned pieces, now on view at @forefront.place 134 Old Street, London, until 17 April. Dancing Women Rising from laminated cherry timber stems, the sculpture moves in a gentle upward rhythm. Its hand-carved twisting texture transitions from deep, expressive cuts into a soft, shallow fade, tracing lines first drawn digitally and then shaped by hand — a quiet dialogue between technology and craft. The exhibition brings together wooden sculptures, crafted furniture, and small maquettes in a collective installation guided by a logic of “Timber and Technique.” Carving, turning, stacking, and alignment become rhythmic acts of assembly, unfolding between material knowledge and embodied making. An Offering is a curatorial collaboration between Jan Hendzel and British-Ghanaian artist and architect @gilestetteynartey The exhibition acts as a reciprocal gesture: the studio’s work is offered to the space, emerging from the offering made by Forefront Gallery through their unique platform. In turn, the gallery becomes an intimate place of process, memory, and making — where the scent of cedar fills the room, the mind wanders instinctively toward touch, and a quiet sense of nostalgia begins to surface. We very much hope you can join us and look forward to welcoming you there. We are pleased to announce that An Offering is now officially open at Forefront until April 17th. Featured works include: - Dancing Women: Composed of laminated cherry main stems with a hand-carved twisting texture that fades from deep carves into a subtle finish. These meet stacked and segmented ash discs at a “kissing point” of balance, all set upon a base of heavily brushed Douglas fir that accentuates the timber’s natural annual rings. - Oddjob: Two turned sections of hard maple—one carved with deep V-groove incisions and the other smooth—featuring an angular section of reclaimed CLT (cross-laminated timber) from Norwegian spruce. The exhibition presents a series of works that unfold between material knowledge and embodied making. Wooden sculptures, crafted furniture, and small maquettes form a collective installation conceived through a logic of “Timber and Technique,” where carving, turning, stacking, and alignment become rhythmic acts of assembly. An Offering is a curatorial collaboration between Jan Hendzel and British-Ghanaian artist and architect Giles Tettey Nartey (@gilestetteynartey ). Shaped as a reciprocal gesture between the artist and the gallery, the space is transformed into an intimate place of process, memory, and making. Models are an excellent way to explore the potential of an idea, allowing us to test and refine composition, balance, and proportion before committing to the final piece. Creating these models also serves as a valuable test of our skills, as they often require similar construction methods to the real object. Producing a finely crafted model reflects a maker’s integrity. Shown here is a 1:5 scale model of the “Pebble Jumble,” reflecting the grain directions and stack assembly. We chose to explore the end grain and face grains of timber in differing manners. The larger section is a full 1:1 scale Douglas fir end grain section, representing an 1/8th segment of Pebble number two. #woodawards #londondesignfestival #woodensculpture #douglasfir #endgrain
