On Balikatan I recently attended an informational and creative session on the BK26 military exercises where they posed the question, "What would the Philippines look like without US military presence?", and it opened many avenues of thought for myself. Bifurcating into two scenarios - if there was no US military presence in the Philippines now or ever in history; PH is such a resource rich country and exists in a strategic position that it would immediately feel the pressure of other imperialist powers anyway. In a contemporary scenario, chinese naval activity in the south china sea would probably increase; taiwan, japan, vietnam and australia would be stirred in someway; internal PH politics would shift too - would they bolster their own military? Are the people organized for national security? In a historical scenario, imagining no Philippine-American war, no intervention of Japanese occupation, no Suspended Apocalypse (see Dylan Rodriguez), no puppet government etc, while a great exercise in ant-imperial bonifacio fanfic, it only revealed to me just how deeply the modern Philippine nation-state was shaped by US presence and makes me question how would PH withstand further imperiailsm of UK, japan, netherlands or france? Are the people organized? Did geopolitical survival amongst warmongering empire necessitate the illustrado condensing of the people and entire archipelago into a tagalog nation state? My broadest takeaway could only be that the need to organize would still exist, but I don't purport to be an avid student of geopolitics or war games so this it not my area - so what do you think? Also many thanks to @malayalosangeles for hosting the space and discussion

For the journalists, creatives, dissidents, advocates; those in the fields, canneries, shops and service - Despite great efforts and advancements within intergenerational and transnational labor/workers rights, hostile justice systems and exclusionary legal frameworks continue to exact legalized forms of oppression and worker exploitation - so the work and advocacy continues. I commend those who center their actions within these tenets, thanks for singing along, take care be safe, join us at our next disko on June 13th

More than just courtship, longing and balldeering, love is foundational to a revolutionary spirit rooted in the love for our community, labor and national struggle. Whether it's the insurrectionist kundimans of the Katipuneros, the reclamation of OPM to distinguish a national identity, or 90s radio RNB nostalgia for OFWs far from home - love has always found a way through our music and artistic expressions. This Valentine's Day, Disko sa Disco returns alongside @manilasound.la and our community organizations to take a closer look at these foundations for the work and revolution ahead - Join us in Little Tokyo for DJ sets, local volunteer opportunities, and a live band performance as we continue the Filipino tradition of music gathering to console, grieve, party and commune - same way it was done throughout history whether it was 1898, 1946, 1986 or now.
