⚡️Introducing: Pilot Residencies, Outer Spaces Fountainbridge Studio As part of our new Pilot Residency programme, we’ve been delighted to support five Edinburgh based artists to sustain their practice and create new work, without set outcomes, in an Outer Spaces studio in central Edinburgh. In autumn 2025, artists Jamie Fitzpatrick (@jamie____fitzpatrick ), Crystal Bennes (@crystalbennes ), Thulani Rachia (@thulani_rachia ), Aoife Cawley (@aoifecawleyart ) and Malcy Duff were invited to take part in an Outer Spaces Pilot Residency, a programme also now underway in Glasgow. Over the next few days we’ll share a little more about some of the artists and how they made use of the opportunity. First up is Jamie Fitzpatrick, who used the space and support to prepare for his upcoming solo exhibition presented at @kunsthalltrondheim , 4 June – 27 September 2026. 'National Theatre' features a new body of ambitious sculptural work, installed alongside sound and painted theatrical landscape sets, co-commissioned with Outer Spaces. Look out for more from Jamie over the next few weeks, as he shares more about his process and the ideas present in the show. Jamie Fitzpatrick has been hard at work in the Studio preparing for his exhibition here this summer. He's been working closely with Jordan McQuaid, our Head of Studio, exploring interdisciplinary printmaking, including merging elements of installation, casting, sculpture and drawing with screenprinting and plate lithography. @jamie____fitzpatrick #contemporaryprintmaking #printmaking

Turns out it's St George's day. Seems like an apropos time to put up some WIP images of the sculpture St George and the Dragon which will be one of the central works for the exhibition 'National Theatre' that @kunsthalltrondheim announced today as part of their summer programme. @j________r________ @oystercrackersandwiches

We are very excited to announce our upcoming exhibition “National Theatre”by Jamie Fitzpatrick, opening June 4. This solo presentation, Fitzpatrick’s first in Scandinavia, examines the visual and symbolic frameworks through which national identity is constructed. Drawing on the British context as a case study, the exhibition strips away the veneer of neutrality from monuments and historical imagery, revealing their role in shaping narratives of belonging, power, and exclusion. Through newly commissioned monumental sculptures and theatrical landscapes, informed in part by AI-generated renderings of preservationist rhetoric, Fitzpatrick exposes how nationalist aesthetics operate between satire and critique, conjuring fictive environments that imagine an ideal country existing as much in thought as in physical space. National Theatre features new artworks co-commissioned by Kunsthall Trondheim in partnership with @outerspaces.scotland , produced within their studio network in Scotland, UK. Read more about the exhibition on our website. Jamie Fitzpatrick, Outer Spaces Studio, Edinburgh, UK. Image courtesy of Outer Spaces. I have so many amazing and generous people to thank for helping me bring to life the recent project ‘King Herla’ commissioned by Arts&Heritage at Bartonsham Meadows, Hereford. It’s been such a fulfilling experience to work in such a collaborative way over the course of this project in a way that has been a departure for me. Until this point, I tend to work quite hermetically on projects, sealed off in the studio and locked into productive solitude in the build up to a show. The opportunity to work with so many fantastic people who have brought so much more to this work than I ever could on my own has been a truly amazing experience.  Working on the experiment of using waste soil from which to build sculptural seed bombs for meadow regeneration I need to give a huge thank you to @lucyblippingpetra . It was so much fun hanging out for a few days in the sunshine and dirt, keep tinkling your ceramic feet though the town! A massive thank you too to Abbie McKelvie, Elysia Hughes, Emily Hedges & Beth Lockett for contributing your time and energy to help shift soil and fill the moulds. In the most literal of ways, I could not done it without you all. The biggest of thank you too to guys from the Creative Media course at HCA for literally taking a verbal idea of that was little more than me saying ‘a digital sculpture garden a bit like Pokemon Go’ and turning that into a tangible, working and absolutely fantastic free digital experience.  Lucius Talbott (3D scanning), Logan Newman-Whitworth (3D modelling), and Dave Payne (AR experience design) and Creative Media tutor Nicolas Stevenson. I am so grateful and appreciative of all your guys’ enthusiasm for the project and willingness to be part of this and the way you ran with this to create something that is such an amazing user experience for the commnuity that was truly beyond my wildest expectations. A special thanks to Col and all the guys at Cup Ceramics @cupceramics  for their time, space and endless delicious cake and coffee. What an amazing and special space for Hereford (hang on, this has run on too long and there's still loads more people to thank. I'll continue in the comments....)

Developed through Arts&Heritage’s ongoing commissioning partnership with Herefordshire Wildlife Trust, King Herla  is a new site‑responsive artwork by Jamie Fitzpatrick that responds to the regeneration of Bartonsham Meadows, a floodplain landscape currently being restored using traditional land‑management practices to support biodiversity and ecological resilience. The project comprises two interconnected artworks: a physical sculpture made from the land itself, and an immersive digital experience created in collaboration with local communities. The first artwork takes the form of an augmented reality experience, developed using sculptures made by local communities supported by students from Hereford College of Arts. In this digital work, a ghostly horde of Herla’s knights re‑emerges from the river, combining game design, music and storytelling. The experience has been developed by game design students Lucius Talbott, Logan Newman‑Whitworth and Dave Payne and is accompanied by original music and narrative by Jamie Fitzpatrick. The second artwork is a temporary sculpture of the legendary figure King Herla, an ancient king whose band were said to have plunged into the River Wye, only to re‑emerge two centuries later into a changed world. Created using soil excavated from Bartonsham Meadows as part of a new biodiversity “scrape”, the sculpture is embedded with wildflower seeds and designed to slowly dissolve back into the landscape. As rainfall and flooding break down the clay, seeds are released into the meadow, allowing the artwork to actively support the site’s ongoing regeneration. While the physical sculpture is designed to disappear in tune with the seasonal and ecological rhythms of the floodplain, the digital artwork creates a lasting digital legacy, allowing the story of King Herla to continue to be experienced on the meadows. A key element of the project is the creation of a new “scrape” a shallow depression or temporary pond designed to attract and support wetland wildlife such as wading birds, amphibians, dragonflies and specialist plants. These small‑scale interventions can significantly increase local biodiversity by mimicking natural wetlands.
