Susan Aldworth: Belongings
Stories behind the exhibition
The first image shows an embroidered printed photograph of Luigia Domenica Anna Pini (Susan Aldworth’s maternal grandmother), who was born on 21st December 1903. She was the eldest child of Rocco Pini and Maria Conti. They lived at Menoni, a gated farm in Casanova, a small village on the outskirts of Bardi, a castle town in the Emilia Romagna. Luigia had five siblings: Pietro (b 1905), Angelina (b.1907), Maria (b.1909), Antonio (b. 1912) and Giovanna (b.1916). She met Giuseppe Berni at church and they married on 5 February 1923. Luigia was an ambitious: she was clever, fluent in church Latin, and wanted to train as a nurse, but Giuseppe wanted a simple life without responsibility.
They moved to the UK in 1924 to find a better life.
The image of Luigia is embroidered on the nightgown that she brought with her from Italy to the UK, and wanted to be buried in. Her family didn't think it was posh enough for a burial outfit, and so Susan inherited it. This became the seed of the exhibition.
They lived long lives. Giuseppe Berni died aged 93 in 1994, and Luigia Berni died aged 94 in 1997. They both worked hard until well into their 70s – Giuseppe as a driver at The Vauxhall Cake company, and Luigia as cook and housekeeper to Mrs Bond in Kensington. They had 5 children, 14 grandchildren, and 24 great grandchildren who are all British Citizens and oriundi.
Visit the exhibition to explore their stories further.

Our friends at CWC facing a critical gap in funding that would mean CLOSURE. Please donate if you can:
you can find the link to the crowdfunder in their bio > @communitywellbeingcollective
The Community Wellbeing Collective (CWC) is a grassroots group of people living in or connected to Wester Hailes, Edinburgh. They were brought together in 2021 by social-practice artist Jeanne van Heeswijk, as part of a commission by Edinburgh Art Festival and WHALE Arts. Together they transformed a derelict former off-license in Westside Plaza Shopping Centre into a Community Wellbeing Space, run by and for the people. The CWC is now its own constituted organisation which works in partnership with Edinburgh Art Festival.

Behind the scenes of Susan Aldworth: Modern Alchemy
In Gallery 2, Modern Alchemy sees the artist share the results of a collaboration with Dr Amanda Jarvis of @edinburghuniversity whose research in sustainable chemistry explore how to make chemical synthesis greener including recycling and replacing precious metals with cheaper, more abundant alternatives.
In 2023 Aldworth was awarded a commission by @ascusartandscience to make a series of experimental works in response to Dr Jarvis’ research whose long-term aim is to develop more sustainable catalytic chemistry. To mirror the ambition of Jarvis’ laboratory to reduce, recycle or replace expensive metals in catalysis, Aldworth decided to work in etching, switching from expensive copper and zinc etching plates to cheaper steel plates. By throwing chemicals into the aquatint resin before it was fired onto the plate surface, Aldworth developed a visual equivalence of catalysis– capturing a moment of chemical reaction.

We would like to congratulate Hannah Lim on being shortlisted for the House & Garden Craft Prize! 🌱
Hannah's practice draws on the relationship between her British and Singaporean heritage and how that's reflected historically in design, often creating intricate compositions with detailed motifs and anthropomorphised creatures. In 2022, Edinburgh Printmakers held Hannah's first solo exhibition in Scotland, 'Ornamental Mythologies'. The works in the exhibition saw Lim interpreting and merging imagery, motifs and stories from Medieval and Chinese bestiaries and mythology.
All of these works are available to purchase on our website.

🍝 Pasta Making Workshop
Tuesday 2 June | 6-8pm
To book please see our website: link in bio >Events
This pasta workshop is set up in response to Susan Aldworth’s current exhibition at Edinburgh Printmakers, Belongings.
The session uses pre-made dough to consider how recipes are shared and hold significance to identity, family histories and social interaction! Working with dough, you will be shown how to make patterned pasta; for this, we will reflect on the work in Aldworth’s current exhibition, considering the shapes and marks which appear in the work.
The pasta will then be gathered together, cooked, and served for a relaxed meal.
Please note this workshop concludes in a communal meal which contains gluten.
