For 20 years I’ve had the privilege of knowing the most extraordinary woman, dear Paula. For 10 of those years, I was lucky enough to live right next door to her. At 103 years young, she is sharper and wiser than most people half her age.
Paula grew up in Germany during Hitler’s rise to power. She has shared stories with me that you only read about in history books, stories of fear, uncertainty, survival. She fled her homeland, made her way through Canada, and eventually built a life here in the United States. The courage that took… I can’t even imagine.
When she speaks, I listen. Because she has seen what division can do. She has lived through what happens when compassion disappears.
Our porch talks over the years, about life, love, loss, faith, and resilience, have shaped me more than she probably knows. Even when my visits are short, they mean the world to her. And truthfully, they mean the world to me too.
Her life is a reminder that we never truly know someone’s journey. We don’t know what they’ve escaped, what they’ve endured, or what they’ve sacrificed just to stand where they are today.
Now more than ever, especially with everything happening in the United States, we need to remember to love thy neighbor. Welcome those seeking safety. Be compassionate. Be curious instead of judgmental. Care for one another.
Because sometimes the person next door carries a century of wisdom, survival, and grace.
