Rampage around the Mull
Part 2 of 2
So there’s a bit of story behind this set of photos I shot for
@henrilloyd_ earlier this autumn… on a 4 day sailing and surf trip around the inner Hebrides with some great friends. the long version will come, but till then, the bullet points…
Started strong: rain to make the tropics proud, instantly soaked, denied fuel, and forced to sail the wrong way for hours because apparently marinas run on vibes, not diesel.
Then nature felt bad for us: dolphins, whales, golden light… the ocean saying, “Sorry about earlier, lads.”
We surfed questionable waves in the middle of nowhere: hooting, high-fiving, pretending it was exactly what we’d hoped for.
Discovered a perfect secret (tiny) wave: surfed said wave, acted like we were 12, whooped ourselves hoarse, successful fishing, golden eagles, floating atop stars, Peak life moments.
Then the jib exploded, the mast snapped, the radio died, and we nearly died: cue frantic cable-cutting, mayday calls, and us trying to look calm while internally screaming.
Engine quit. Twice. Lifeboat called. Twice. Towed to port. Cleaned up the mess, jury rig, sailed home like shipwreck survivors who’d misplaced half their dignity.
Ended the trip humbled, grateful, and slightly traumatised: storm raging outside, beer in hand, thinking, “…that escalated.”
Forever grateful to cool headed shipmates:
