My mom Dr. Linda Spears Bunton passed away last month. She was brilliant, beautiful, determined, courageous, fierce, deeply moral and bountifully gregarious. As an educator for over 50 years, she instilled in all of her children, not just the power, but the paramount necessity of education for it would be our life saving sword and shield in a world that too often seems committed to the physical and psychic debasement of people who look like us. She protected us, and prepared us for our journeys while at the same time navigating her own arduous path to the highest levels of academia. She did all of this often amidst the least hospitable of circumstances and yet, her spirit was so indomitable that she never lost her zeal to celebrate, dance, live, laugh, and love. As her many friends and students will attest, she just gave so much to so many people. There is truly nothing I could write here that would be sufficient in communicating the singular profundity of this person. A glorious and peaceful afterlife has never been more well deserved. I love you mom and I’m forever grateful.
Her memorial will be on 4/5 in Miami, FL. Please contact me for details if you wish to attend.

Ok, two things! Go see The Reverend at IFC this week! Its great, the people in it are great, and the people who made it are great! I am very proud to call all of them family and truly honored that a place where I have found so much unique joy and inspiration over the years has been documented to share for all of time. The place is great, the chimichangas are great, the backstage is great and I think its gonna be really fun time. It took a very long time but we finally made it back here. So happy to return to Union pool with Rev. Vince and the love choir tonight! Mondays are officially back, days of the week officially matter again, and we can once again sing, dance, and be as free as we wanna be in a crowded room with people we love. Can’t wait🙏🏾❤️🙏🏾

I’ve never found a picture so filled with joy so difficult to look at. Jumoke was honestly one of those very very few people who was truly deserving of any gifts life has to offer. She was brilliant, kind, hilarious, considerate, humble, thoughtful, and somehow, despite her love of Disney, still not corny?!?! Honestly, completely devoid of all hyperbole, it is difficult to overstate what a rare and wonderful person she was. I think we are conditioned to look for some rationale, some moral consistency or at least some greater good when we are trying to navigate the callous and random cruelty life can confront us with. The whole moral arc of the universe bending slightly towards justice thing....I feel unconsciously I’ve found some peace this way in dealing with death in the past but Jumokes’ sudden untimely passing just seems so profoundly unfair that right now, the suggestion that the universe is anything other than random, indifferent, and often partial to the least scrupulous, feels like a childish and maybe even sadistic notion. The truly amazing thing is, I can pretty much guarantee you that even right now, Jumoke would totally disagree with me and her faith in that long moral arc would be undeterred. I’m telling you, she was honestly just better than most of us. I pray she is now in a place more worthy of her offerings and that her transition was painless and free of fear. I’m truly honored she considered me a friend and my heart just goes out to the entire Adebimpe family. Rest in everlasting peace. ❤️Jumoke Adebimpe❤️
