Favourite Frames of 2025: This year had a heavy focus on environmental photographs. 9/10 of my favourite frames this year were captured with available light in a very documentary style. The goal this year was to become more present and to feel the camera as an extension of my conscious awareness to frame what’s happening right now. Just be present, aware, and trust your instincts. Specific image descriptions are in the comments.
Favourite Frames of 2024
1) Storming the Beach of Normandy with WWII reenactors on the morning of June 6, 2024. The 80th anniversary of Operation Overlord.
2) Welding for Cryptotherm website for @community_productions . Shooting sparks with strobes always makes for a fun frame.
3) Chantel in the Studio. This year I began experimenting with different kinds of lighting for portraits. This was lit with a spotlight on a 200W LED fixture and a Gobo filter to give the light an interesting shape.
4) Johnny in the Studio. Another spotlight setup except it’s projected only onto the background and I taped yellow & red gels to give a blood moon gradient—blue gel on a bare strobe aimed back at Johnny. (@jlenewman )
5) Steve in the Studio. A bare strobe lifted to the ceiling. The idea was to mimic the harsh midday sun and create an image with a sense of visual interest & depth against a plain colour backdrop. (@stevie_boiii )
6) The Calgary Tower on a midday photo walk. Frequent photo walks help to develop an eye for interesting frames with nice light.
7) Kytura Product shoot. Finally hit a level of “pinch me I can’t believe I shot that” with the lighting on this product shoot for @studiosperoyyc
8) The Rocky Mountains in B&W. On a flight to Prince George, I was awe-stricken by how close the plane was to the tops of the mountains. Even from above, the power that exudes from these mountains is not diminished.
9) Long Exposure B&W on Nose Hill. Solitude.
