Made in the Middle features artists at different points in their career and from many backgrounds. Weâve been talking to them about the challenges theyâve encountered and the support theyâve received on their career path.
Jade Webb is a textile artist based in Leicester.
âWhile doing my Fine Art degree I become really interested in the Art/Craft divide and how they intertwined, so started sculpting out of felt and wool. I found and enjoyed weaving after I graduated and made little looms out of picture frames. I wanted to develop it further, so I enrolled onto an MA in fashion and textiles in 2017. I learned the more technical side of weaving and looked more into sustainability and biodiversity of fibres within my work, which I have continued to develop and experiment with.
Finding creative communities has been really useful. I joined
@webinart_uk which held great sessions on developing your practice, as well as
@design_nationuk , where Iâm currently an associate member, who do lots for their members, including introducing you to other fellow creatives in your area called âcluster hubsâ where we meet and organise projects, I would really recommend them. Signing up to creative newsletters like
@Creative_leics has also been great to find out about open calls and exhibitions.
Next, I really want to explore my theme of Neurodivergence further, itâs quite a personal topic and one that I havenât really talked about much, so itâs been great for Made in the Middle to give me the opportunity to explore that. Iâve had a really positive response from other people as it has started the conversation for them to open up about their experiences too.
Going forward, I would love to have more work in exhibitions and enjoy experimenting with more sculptural pieces."
