Xin Chen is an artist working across ceramics, painting, and found objects. Her practice centres on building a personal visual language through the combination of sculptural forms, colour, and decorative motifs. Using hand-building and painting processes, she transforms everyday or discarded materials into playful compositions that move between flatness and structure. Inspired by daily observations, folk art, and ornamental traditions, her work creates whimsical visual environments where figuration and pattern coexist.

Join us for the launch of a EDITION26 which brings together BACKLIT creative practitioners presenting two works from different moments in their practice.
Pairing earlier works with new pieces, the exhibition invites audiences to encounter artistic practice as an evolving process shaped by time, experimentation and changing perspectives.
Shown in dialogue, the works reveal recurring themes, new directions and the quiet or dynamic transformations that shape an artist‘s trajectory.

Together we’ll be working with the Bellarmine jar - a 17th-century salt-glazed vessel known for its bearded face, using coiling and air-dry clay to create small, reimagined versions.

House in Ink with Xin Chen
Saturday 18th October, 11am to 1pm
Come and join a fun drop-in drawing session with brush and ink! Participants will take inspiration from the houses around the neighbourhood and turn them into playful brush drawings. It’s about observing and simplifying what you see, and feeling the softness of the brush in your hand.
Experiment with bold strokes and inky lines, capturing shapes and forms in your own way. No need to be “right” or “realistic”, just enjoy the process of looking, noticing, and letting the brush dance on the paper.
