I’m truly delighted that my piece “Nursing Home” has been selected for this year’s Royal Scottish Academy annual exhibition. If I’m not mistaken, this is the world’s second-oldest annual art exhibition, now in its 199th year. I’m overjoyed to have made the final shortlist, so here’s the info: the show runs from May 3 to June 8 in central Edinburgh, right next to the Scottish National Gallery. Friends in Scotland who happen to be nearby are welcome to drop in—admission is free. Thank you all!
It is my new work "Independence", feel free to contact me if you would like to exhibit it , thanks! Yes, it is a common megaphone placed upside down :)
My work would be exhibited in @aptstudiosgallery which is the south of Thames River from today to 17/5, feel free to visit, thanks! : 6 Creekside, Harold Wharf, London, United Kingdom SE8 4SA
Thanks Gallery Manager of @beerslondon Rebecca Smith @rebecca_j_smith reviewed my work, her Critique on my work "Nursing Home" is as follows : I think this is a thoughtful and sensitive practice, and it is great to see such active exhibition history, particularly the inclusion in the Royal Scottish Academy Annual Exhibition. That level of recognition speaks to the strength and relevance of your work.
What stands out most to me is the emotional depth and sincerity within the piece. The subject matter of the nursing home is handled with care and attentiveness, and there is a quiet intensity in how you translate lived experience into a moving image. The work feels reflective and grounded in observation but also shaped by memory and personal connection. I think the way you draw from your father-in-law experience gives the work a strong conceptual and emotional anchor.
The pacing and atmosphere of the video are also very effective. There is a sense of stillness and contemplation that allows the viewer to sit with the work, rather than be directed too forcefully. This creates space for reflection, which feels appropriate given the subject matter. The layering of sound, image, and memory works well in building that environment.
In terms of development, I think there is an opportunity to consider how the narrative or structure could be pushed further. At times, I find myself wanting slightly more variation or contrast within the piece, whether through shifts in rhythm, perspective, or visual intensity. This could help to deepen the emotional arc and keep the viewer more actively engaged throughout.
I also think it would be interesting to reflect on how much is revealed versus withheld. The subtlety is a strength, but there may be moments where introducing a clearer focal point or a more defined gesture could strengthen the impact without losing that sensitivity.
