A week in Minneapolis for @theatlantic . Endless thanks to @lizmariesanders for her support and guidance through this week, and to the people of Minneapolis for letting us share a small part of their story.
Day 5 - ICE was relatively quiet in South Minneapolis today, where I have been riding along with local residents doing neighborhood ICE watch for the past week. We spent most of the day at the Whipple Federal Building, where protestors continue to clash with DHS despite snowfall and increasingly bitter cold temperatures.
The ritual at Whipple is pretty much the same every day. Agents taunt protestors as they drive in and out of the building. Protestors get closer to the entrance than DHS wants. ICE Agents come out and tear gas everyone and arrest 1-2 protestors.
Today one protestor ICE tried to arrest managed to make a break for it across the fields behind Whipple. Agents chased after, scattering far and wide, though they did not appear to find their target - a first since I’ve been here.
Day 3 - ICE agents shot a second person in Minneapolis tonight, and flooded the streets surrounding the scene. Hundreds of protestors showed up. Lots of tear gas. Tensions were already high during the day as agents began regularly threatening press and civilian observers with arrest for documenting their operations
I’ve been riding along with local observers this week, who have also noticed a sharp increase in ICE deploying a favorite tactic - after following agents in their cars for an extended period of time, ICE will look up the registration of the car, and lead observers to their own homes, in an attempt to intimidate them
The sense that Minneapolis is a testing ground for these tactics - that DHS is using it as a sort of laboratory for future expanded operations - looms large
More to come as the week unfolds…
