Closing one magazine to open another! Metaphorically!
After nearly 6 years at National Geographic, I’m thrilled to join the brilliant brains at New York Magazine as a senior photo editor.
My @natgeo curtain call is @acacia.johnson ’s verdant feature on backcountry bears in Katmai National Park. Our @nymag opening act comes via @markpetersonpixs ’ energized vision of the DNC, co-conspired with @belaqueue and guided by @jodyquon . Feeling grateful.

“The new science of stress,” photographed faithfully by @brianfinke for @natgeo . As researchers hone in on the exact mechanics of chronic stress, it’s increasingly clear that this public health epidemic is as urgent as heart disease or brain damage (just two of the outcomes linked to longterm stress). Solutions can come from labs, public policy, and the people in our every day lives.
It’s fitting that this 30-page story from the June issue is (also) a Gemini as it required an incredible amount of interviews, pivots, and yes, s t r e s s.
A massive thanks to each expert who answered our many questions, every person who agreed to be photographed in a variety of intimate scenarios, and above all to Brian, whose distinct vision and visual prowess are matched only by his kindness and dedication.
Idk about you, but I am *personally* still in my ‘year in review’ era…and it’s always icing on the cake when visionary folks i e worked have images included in @natgeo Pictures of the Year. @katieorlinsky made serenity from the most logistically chaotic/cursed assignment. @sashafoto pulled new life from a very-photographed icon. And I am reminded of photography’s universal language, a connector across even aphasia.
Merely a month late to celebrate my first print feature in July’s Nat Geo - a trip across Italy and along the 20 million euro restoration of the Appian Way. Can the world’s first road become its greatest walking trek? It’s a question 2,000 years in the making that photographer @andrea_frazzetta first posed to me in 2020. I’m honored to have helped shepherd his vision - just took a couple of years to bring it to y’all. Our story about sustainable tourism expanded to explore cultural pride, infrastructure, and history in Italy. Peek more photos, drone footage edited by @rebekahbellbarlas and the winding, witty text from @ninastrochlic online 🗺
June 7th - this is 30. And that was 29. And that was 28. Three years of stretching, settling in, and self timers. Happy with the ways I’ve grown and shrunk.
