Bearing Witness, an autobiographical comic written by Vinita (@saptamatrika ), illustrated by me, and published by @differenceenginesg , is out! You can purchase it on Difference Engine's site. Very honoured to have been trusted with this story. ๐ต๏ธ
You can also join our upcoming book launch as part of Singapore Writer's Festival on 20 Nov, 4-5PM, at the Arts House! We hope to open more conversations about pregnancy and miscarriage, and the richness of Southeast Asian stories in comic form.
Synopsis from DE's site:
"Suffering from postpartum depression after the birth of her first child, a 42-year-old musters up the courage to try for another baby. Struggling through two trimesters of nausea, exhaustion, and recurrent, intense dreams, she hopes to hit the 20-week milestone and see the light at the end of the tunnel, only to discover during a routine ultrasound scan that her baby has passed away in the womb.
And so begins a surreal life on the other side of loss, where grief and ecstasy are often bedfellows, tears come from nowhere, other peopleโs babies become the objects of intense affection, and where the baby that never came to be shows up in stars, stones, seeds, and her toddlerโs imagination."

From last year: backgrounds for "Rising Above Together: Mun Hoe's Story" video, produced by @findingpictures and directed by @jerroldchong . If you're in SG you might have seen it around. First few images were the full background illustrations, and the later images are some final stills! Animation is by the talented folks at FP. (They recently also had a cool cartoon Puberteens, check it out)
I keep forgetting or being indecisive about posting work art stuff, trying to be better at that lol

kucumbu tubuh indahku
i wanted to draw this particular scene that struck me, like a moment of recognition or acceptance for juno, in the midst of trauma and uncertainty.
this film means a lot to me and i've always wanted to do an illustration project for it, like a series of posters and studies...but i just haven't had the time since last year :') maybe someday. this will have to do for now.

Illustrations for BARC Labs' (@barc.labs ) The Art Detective, a workshop where participants got to investigate a damaged artwork through an unfolding casefile!
This was a lovely experience, and as a mystery fiction fan I had a lot of fun drawing these. I learned a lot about art conservation through the storyline and reference photos. Thank you for the opportunity :)

It took 4 years for the @elsewherecinemaclub crew to meet in person โ but we made it!
In 2022, in the midst of a pandemic and PhD despair, @krtan_2022@erikaa.swr@jackfruitchips_ and I decided to set up an online screening club dedicated to independent films by and about women and queer folk in Southeast Asia. We met so many wonderful filmmakers along the way: @babyruthv who documented the lives of OFWs in Hong Kong, @pamstrr who made a catholic gothic film on a toy camera, @samsimtak who made a dramedy with/about her mom, @laminoodles who chronicled the loving family life of a queer couple and their adopted son in Myanmar (and dialed in during the early days of the coup), @leejessica23 who made a haunting true crime documentary with Netflix, @aiess who made one of the first films to feature the Cebuano language, and @sarntolstice and @thuytr.ng whose semi-autobiographic films tell stories of the queer Asian diaspora.

Part 3/4: "The Remis Shields"
Had the honour of illustrating comics for @erc.earth as part of Beneath the Sands, a global investigation project on sand mining published in April. Journalists from 12 countries expose how a weakly regulated industry overlooks the environmental destruction and human toll of the highly lucrative and low-risk business of sand mining.
This is the second comic in the collection, which focuses on Indonesia. The images are awkwardly cropped here, you can see the full thing on beneaththesands.earth !
Credits:
Coordinator: Richa Syal
Reporters: Sharon Atieno (Kenya), Febriana Firdaus (Indonesia), Tharushi Pitigala (Sri Lanka), Teng Yalirozy (Cambodia), Lay Sopheavotey (Cambodia), Shamsheer Yousaf (India), Monica Jha (India)
Introduction from the Beneath the Sands website ( beneaththesands.earth ):
"In this series, the Environmental Reporting Collective highlights examples from Cambodia, India, Kenya and Indonesia in which sand mining projects have hindered womenโs rights, resulting in increased gender inequality and the further marginalization and abuse of women. We also share stories of women on the frontlines of sand mining, showcasing how they are playing an active role in the resistance against mining activities.
Our hope in sharing these lived experiences is to contribute to a broader perspective on environmental justice."
