The Spider Consciousness installation we built at the burn this year was inspired by the ongoing debate about possible explanations of intelligent behaviour in Portia spiders. These spiders have an incredibly interesting perceptual system, and their behaviour is heavily guided by their excellent vision. The (mostly philosophical) interpretation of the sensorimotor system’s role in advanced cognition and potentially any conscious functioning became the basis for the idea of creating a choreography of light patterns in the giant spider’s eyes, paired with original music, which one could experience by walking inside of the spider’s head. This audio-visual part of the installation is guiding the daring visitor of the arthropod exoskeleton onto a contemplative journey.
