Fins i tot tenia el seu propi club de salsa al restaurant de l’Òpera de Malmö als anys noranta. Però, com que els ballarins de salsa solen beure aigua mentre ballen, el club va haver de tancar per la baixa venda de begudes, tot i que les nits atreien un gran públic. Quan vaig viatjar a Xile per primera vegada com a adulta, vaig descobrir l’escena emergent del reggaeton i el subgènere feminista del neoperreo. Durant uns anys, el reggaeton va ser el meu vincle amb Amèrica Llatina i amb amb la meva pròpia herència, fins que vaig descobrir la salsa. La música salsa sempre havia format part del que escoltàvem a casa, però el ball se m’havia escapat. Ara la salsa ho ocupa tot. PRETENDING! Meine Kleider sind super akkurat. Denn, wenn Du als „anders“ und „arm“ angesehen wirst, gibt es keinen Respekt und damit keinen Schutz. Pretend! Face it! Pretend! Überlebenstechnik. Sei wie und was Du willst! Freiraum, Gestaltungsmöglichkeit, Raum für Selbstentwürfe. Mach Dein Ding! War da nicht ein Versprechen? Jemand sein, jemand anderes sein, sich entwerfen. Entfaltung. War das die Wirklichkeit? Für Wen? Und was ist, wenn die Blicke fixieren, wenn die Erwartungen festhalten, in der alten Rolle, in der fremdbestimmten Rolle? Die Räume sind klein. Wer darf behaupten etwas anderes zu sein, als die Zuschreibung vorgibt? #AutumnSeason London Performance Studios presents the UK premiere of Casino, a dance piece by choreographer Ofelia Jarl Ortega. Taking its title from one of many names for salsa dancing in Cuba, also a name for a place where people go to dance, Casino sees Jarl Ortega, caterina daniela mora jara and Jao Moon, move on a fictitious dance floor in a Latin American club for couples dancing. Each dancer brings their relationship to salsa, letting it reverberate in their body and through a repertoire of historical and personal memories. Following the international ‘Latin boom’ of the 1990s and 2000s—exemplified in the global success of artists like Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin and Marc Anthony— there was an explosion in popularity of salsa dancing in Sweden, particularly amongst Chilenos exiled post-Pinochet dictatorship. Whilst salsa has never been a national dance in Chile, salsa gatherings amongst Chilenos in Sweden swelled in popularity as a way to connect to Latin American heritage, becoming a subculture by and for the diaspora. To be Latinx, one needed to know how to dance salsa, a cliché that haunts the performers in this piece. In Casino, staged without music, the relationships between the dancers and the sounds of their steps evokes a musicality that is present in its absence. In a subtle, restrained, detailed and playful way, the three dancers connect, and fail to connect, simultaneously. Back to my first time performing THE LIFETIME OF FIRE in my beloved Athens. This was a collaboration between @katais_athens and Jao Moon results in a ritualistic performance, inspired by ‘El Día de los Muertos,’ A body moves in circles with a bunch of candles on its head, while melted candles are falling on this body; the ritual explores the space between pain and pleasure, symbolizing a passage between life and death… Special thanks to: . @katais_athens and @vincentt90 for putting everything together and for your beautiful flowers arrangement and setting. Living in an environment of constant resistance made them question the predominant social orders, this became the matter of Jao Moon’s work.
