For everyone whose life was touched by Derrick Smit - my friend, my right hand, my partner in so many adventures - the invitation above is to join us in celebrating his memory and the light he brought to our lives.
It is with great sadness that I share the news that Derrick Smit passed away on August 9.
Since the day I opened my first DavidBartonGym in 1992, Derrick was by my side. He was more than a colleague - he was a constant presence in my life. Creative. Stylish. Effortlessly cool. He had a way of making every moment better, every place more alive.
His influence on Gym U is undeniable, but the mark he left on my life is even greater. The laughter, the energy, the quiet moments in between - those are what I will miss most.
The gym will never be the same without him. Nor will I.
—David Barton
