@djritu “Venues wouldn't give nightime slots to a lot of Asian promoters, so they’d give you an afternoon slot.”
👀 LMAO ISN’T THAT SO REAL IYKYK
I love being South Asian. I LOVE being Bangladeshi and Pakistani. It took a while to realise this though and now I mourn my splintered mother tongue every single day. It feels like an unfair burden that my parents left me to connect from so far away in such a hostile time and place.
I wish I could put into words the feelings I felt when I played my first Bangladeshi song in a set (Rupa - Aaj Shanibar), or when I first played a Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan song on radio. Embarrassingly, it took so much courage. There’s a particular kind of joy in not having that be a big deal anymore. I feel more whole the more I connect to it all.
Like majority of other south asians living away from the Mother/Fatherland, our experiences of diaspora are so complex (not to mention the grief of our diaspora being so widespread). We’ve been called names, sometimes been abused by people here and there. We’re not like the place we’re from, or the place we were born. If only some of you could understand the breadth of mourning behind being a brown kid.
I’m constantly reminding myself that being from a minority brings perspective and perspective makes you more compassionate. I am grateful. Tomorrow, it’s about trying to create a space where all the brown bodies feel seen and like they are enough. And sharing it with people who are willing to listen and learn. Talking about it is hard, I don’t think I have the language to describe what all of it feels like but I hope to learn how to put it into words one day.
