As of TODAY, Black women are the group that has experienced the HIGHEST increase in unemployment over the past year (followed by Black men). And that’s a bad thing.
Because Black women are the economic lifelines for our communities—breadwinners if you will. If we can’t make a living, our ENTIRE economy shrinks. This is #TheDoubleTax.

In 2018, I co-founded the @sadiecollective , which is named after @dstinc1913 first president and the first African-American PhD Economist, Dr. Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander.

Writing about motherhood changed me. Fundamentally. SWIPE LEFT 👉🏿
Before #TheDoubleTax, I saw my mom and my sisters as just moms. I remember telling my sister to get a nanny once, and she laughed over the phone. After checking that price tag, I’m surprised she didn’t cuss me out lol.
Writing about motherhood taught me that being a mom is hard—very hard. It taught me that people are very unforgiving of moms, show little grace to moms. It taught me that the public sector does very little to help moms and the private sector punishes moms for choosing motherhood. It taught me that my mom’s daily dates with The Oprah Show were the only reprieve she got in a day’s work and that my sister’s exhaustion was valid. It taught me to understand, to empathize, to listen and to learn. It taught me that loving our moms goes beyond caring about them when they take care of us. It taught me that it is expensive to define a woman’s worth by her womb and a mother’s worth by her children.

I have come to learn and internalize that no system cares about Black women.
Not really.
They extract, they exploit, they warp, they twist, they lie, they trivialize, they conditionally accept, they tolerate, but they do not care. They do not care about Black women.
These systems will sanitize murderous, violent men before upholding a woman’s life as sacred. Let that woman be a Black woman, and the attacks will come from all sides, from places you couldn’t have possibly imagined. This is misogynoir and the double tax rolled up into one.
In a world that continues to deny Black women basic empathy, may we continue to preserve and exalt our humanity. May we strive to live boldly and move with purpose. May we be surrounded by good things—joy, love, laughter. And may we never be forgotten despite the attempts of many.
Rest in Power Dr. Cerina Fairfax, Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer, Barbara Deer, and too many other Black women victims of DV.
