I think that’s the thing about leaving a place- you expect it to be frozen in time, but when you do go back, you realize the same number of days has passed regardless of your absence.
Sad/happy tears that mark the end of my grandparents’ place in 사당동 that existed as an institution since before I was born, and my aunt and uncle’s place in 가회동. Glad I was able to visit one last time and try to distill all the things that happened within these walls to memory 🫧
vertical city, chongqing !
up & over, down & under
(it all started when I went to chongqing hotpot in pasadena 5 years ago…knew my path would lead me here🌶️)
SŪNNA
In this scene, our protagonist Lakshmi is taken to the audiologist office and has to face the reality of her hearing loss. I wanted to capture the feeling of being a kid and experiencing life passively, like things are happening to you rather than being able to actively make your own choices. I remember being this age and wondering what certain events would mean in the context of the rest of my life. I wanted to channel feelings of claustrophobia and detachment, even as the events around Lakshmi are very real and affecting.
