Alex Obvious — Musician Portrait Session in Los Angeles. Los Angeles continues to attract creative talent from around the world. Recently, the studio welcomed musician Alex Obvious for a portrait session exploring mood, character, and the quiet intensity often found in working artists. The aim was simple: create portraits that felt timeless, intimate, and cinematic—images suited for album artwork, press features, and artist branding. A Portrait Language Inspired by Music Musicians often bring a natural sense of rhythm and atmosphere to a portrait session. Their awareness of mood and performance translates into subtle expression and body language. For Alex’s session, the approach was intentionally minimal. Simple styling and carefully shaped lighting allowed personality and presence to lead the image. Lighting explored during the session included low-key cinematic setups, rim lighting to separate the subject from shadow, bold color backgrounds for promotional imagery, and painterly tones inspired by classical portraiture. The resulting portraits feel both contemporary and timeless, capturing the reflective intensity of a musician at work. Cinematic Portraiture in Los Angeles Each session at the Los Angeles studio is designed as a collaboration. Subtle direction and natural movement help create portraits that feel authentic and expressive. Influenced by Caravaggio and classical portraiture, the studio style blends fine-art lighting with a contemporary editorial approach. Book a Portrait Session in Los Angeles Rory Lewis photographs actors, musicians, creatives, and executives using a distinctive cinematic lighting style that emphasizes character and presence. Portrait Masterclass Spotlight — Devin McElvogue. A very special thank you to Devin McElvogue — whose presence, professionalism, and responsiveness elevated this workshop to a truly exceptional level. Devin brought an actor’s depth and vulnerability to the frame, allowing us to demonstrate how to build connection, mood, and narrative in portrait photography. Throughout the session, we focused not only on controlling light but on eliciting emotion — how to help a subject express something that feels genuine and compelling. Devin’s ability to hold a moment, to shift subtly with direction, and to trust the process enabled us to capture portraits that go beyond likeness and into true character. Our time with Devin illustrated a core principle of this masterclass: technical mastery is only part of the equation; building rapport and fostering collaboration with your subject is what breathes life into an image.

Portrait Masterclass Spotlight — Adam Wesley. I also want to extend deep appreciation to Adam Wesley, whose contribution to the workshop extended far beyond the frame. With a thoughtful presence and an intuitive sense of expression, Adam demonstrated how an actor’s awareness can transform a photographic session into a collaborative performance. In this portrait, we explored the interplay between controlled lighting and the subtleties of facial expression — teaching participants how to see and direct nuance in real time. Adam’s engagement with the camera helped elevate every shot, offering both beginners and experienced shooters alike a live example of how to communicate intention through imagery. Workshops like this are about more than camera settings or lighting diagrams; they are about developing your eye, refining your direction, and understanding how to bring out presence, depth, and authenticity in every portrait.

Tyler Huxtable — Actor Headshots in Los Angeles. In today’s film and TV landscape — shaped by the visual language of HBO and Netflix — an actor’s headshot must feel like a moment lifted from a story, not a neutral studio photograph. Actor Tyler Huxtable came to my Downtown Los Angeles studio for a cinematic headshot session rooted in truth, restraint, and screen presence. The focus was on authenticity — portraits that feel contemporary, readable, and ready for casting directors. Tyler brings grounded, intelligent energy to the camera. Rather than forcing expression, we leaned into stillness, subtle emotional shifts, and character-driven moments, using sculpted, cinematic lighting and minimal interference so the images feel observational — allowing casting directors to project story and possibility onto the actor. His credits — including Love’s Last Stand, Sardinia, Not Today, and Bliss — lean toward realism and nuance. The portraits were designed to support that trajectory by avoiding trend-heavy styling in favor of timeless, production-ready imagery. My sessions are calm and collaborative — built around the actor, not rigid poses or formulas. With Tyler, the emphasis was on letting internal life register on camera, because that space is often where the strongest images live. In Downtown Los Angeles, I photograph actors for film, TV, and streaming — crafting headshots that communicate presence, credibility, and emotional range. Tyler’s session is a great example of how simplicity, intention, and trust can produce portraits that genuinely support an actor’s career.

Congratulations to Stephen Graham on His Emmy Win. What an incredible moment for one of Britain’s finest actors. Stephen Graham has been named Outstanding Lead Actorat the Emmy Awards for his unforgettable performance in Netflix’s Adolescence. In his moving acceptance speech, Stephen described himself as “just a mixed-race kid from a block of flats in Kirkby”, humbly reminding us all of the power of perseverance, talent, and heart. He paid tribute to his family—his children Grace and Alfie, and his wife Hannah Walters, his “rock” and “soulmate”—acknowledging their love and support as the foundation of his success. I’ve admired Stephen’s work for many years—from This Is England and Boardwalk Empire to The Irishman and Snatch. His ability to embody complex, gritty, and deeply authentic characters is second to none. When Stephen accepted my invitation to sit for a portrait at my London studio, it was a real honour. As a fellow Scouser, I wanted to capture the essence of his craft: moments of stillness where his expression was emotionless, shifting quickly into fierce, exasperated intensity. That duality is what makes him so extraordinary, and I was determined my portraits would reflect that range. Stephen’s Emmy win feels personal, not only because I have photographed him, but because I’ve watched his journey from Liverpool’s Everyman Youth Theatre to international acclaim. His triumph is a reminder of why I love portraiture—being able to document and interpret people at pivotal moments in their lives and careers. Congratulations to Stephen Graham—an exceptional actor and a true inspiration.
