August Detox (Off the Airwaves)
Like every year
When August begins,
I disconnect —
No socials for me.
But this time,
It’s all I need —
To step away
And let myself breathe.
The last goodbye
Still feels so so deep.
And lately, it’s been
Not so easy to sleep.
In other years,
I’ve used this time,
To camp in Yosemite,
And tan by the sand —
But this August
I just need to heal,
And maybe even learn
How to live without him.
My posts are on pause,
I do need the space —
An electronic detox
To slow down my pace.
I’ll walk, see the sights,
Write a poem or two,
And chase the last sparks
Of a nice sunset view.
For those who know me,
You’ll always know how,
To reach out and call me,
Send a nice text somehow.
For those who truly care,
You’ll show up, without swipes,
Cuz when friendships are rare,
We don’t need all these likes.
We can meet — not by chance,
Enjoy a movie, a hike,
Share a picnic, a dance,
Or just do what we like.
Because the world outside
Was made to be seen —
Not trapped inside
A flat blue-lit screen.
So this month, I’ll be away,
Fully living each day —
No scrolling, no stalling,
Not even light stalking 🤭
And come September,
When my pause is complete,
I’ll return — and remember
To post with a new heartbeat.

Traditions are like Hansel & Gretel’s morsels left on the road… you pick them up with curiosity and they’ll remind you of where you came from and, at the same time, how far you’ve gone.
I must’ve been around 5 years old the first time I saw a crate filled with @jarritos at my grandpa’s backyard warehouse. He used to have a soda distribution business, before he went into politics, and had #Jarritos merchandise of all kinds piled up that were given to him to share with his clients (like the serving tray in the last couple of pics, which my Dad kindly gave me on a trip to Mexico after my gramma passed).
I remember being fascinated by the happy colorful bottles of different flavors (of which I hated Tamarind, I don’t know why!). Didn’t drink much soda growing up but these definitely had a more joyful appearance compared to the dark and evil coloring of the famous “colas” of the time.
Seeing a display of Jarritos at the @grandcentralmarketla just brought back all those memories. What a fun place to visit on a Friday nite: so casual (very casual 😉), with live music, snouts, braided donuts and breakfast for dinner. Entertaining, flirty, relaxed and well…very traditional ✨

I’ve been meaning to pick the oranges from my trees because they’ve been ready for a while and kept falling getting smashed when hitting the concrete, and hadn’t had a chance to do it… but sometimes Mother Earth makes sure you’re taken care of! Options, options, options… But how many choices do we really need? Is the illusion of unlimited choices, this abundance of alternatives, truly helping us fine-tune exactly what we want or is it just crowding our vision giving us ‘option paralysis’? Has this plethora of possibilities, this paradox of choice, made us believe we can dispose of easily because every ‘plate’ seems replaceable? Could we manage to feel fulfilled, satisfied and content with our selection even if we haven’t explored it all without feeling we’re missing out, without thinking there’s better out there? One can only hope…

Sometimes it’s imperative to make an exception to the rule. This “third place” of my feed is reserved for dishes I’ve created and prepared myself, my #empiricalchefs homemade little masterpieces - because I love to cook… But today I had THE MOST DELICIOUS beet carpaccio at #agnespasadena and it deserves a permanent spot here, especially because I want to remember it to recreate it.
The recipe goes like this: A bed of humus, shaved beets, crushed parsnips, sliced tangerines, a ginger mouse, and candied walnuts topped with micro-green sprouts. When I became an American I promised myself I wouldn’t miss voting in an election as long as I lived. This Super Tuesday wasn’t an exception. I wanted both @repadamschiff and @joebiden on the ballot on November 5th.

There’s a man sitting at the bar, his name is Carlos. He’s from Ecuador. His wife is from Jalisco and they have come to this dive bar every Wednesday since the place opened. They have it going on for them, you can tell. It’s their thing, this continuous Wednesday date.
Behind them is a cute couple, two creatives probably on a first date. It’s not going to work for them, he’s an early bird, she’s a nite owl, but they have fun all the same. They don’t get into politics because why would they? Words are their thing and the night is all about categories, vicissitudes, landfills, kiosks, being incorrigible and never having played video games.
The ceiling is covered with one dollar bills of past dates leaving their mark at the bar. While they leave a memory of their ephemeral connection pinned up to the ceiling above them (like so many before them have done and so many after them will), they -each, silently, ask themselves what permanent mark they will leave on this world….
No one knows -yet, so they just pin their single and order another glass of cider - like so many before them and so many after them will too….
