Today is Cinco de Ojo aka my New Yorkversary. Lucky 13 🤞🏾🍀 and I finally feel like a true New Yorker. I vote every time, I give the best subway directions, I split evenly, hell sometimes I pay the full thing. I love how the trees literally grow out of the concrete (it’s quite silly when you think of it) and push it up every time. I love you can connect with anyone and everyone or no one, if you so choose. I love the hustle. I love the randomness. I love the openness. I love the chaos. I love New York.

Part deux 🇫🇷 I’m sorry for the last slide (no I’m not)

Paris long haul 🇫🇷

“The memories that pain you when someone leaves. Will also be the same memories that comfort you when they’re gone” -ADJ I have used the 30 days since your memorial to try and heal from the thought of you no longer being earth side. I have used the 60 days since your passing to try and make sense of how someone my age, someone who was good, kind, and full of love for everyone he held dear, would get something as final or unfair as a rare cancer. I have come to the conclusion that I will probably need more time. Obiora was an amazing illustrator and shoe designer. He was always good for a random FaceTime and would sometimes call me when I just had a thought of him pop in my head. We would lay out in Fort Greene Park on any given COVID day or go play tennis, even though I’m extremely uncoordinated unless the ball is bigger than my hand. He would tease me mercilessly with salacious, cheeky memes that I wouldn’t open and had a wicked sense of humor…honestly one of the funniest people I know. His last prank on me was being older than me by two months when I thought he was TWO YEARS younger (a true Libra! Why are y’all always lying about your age?) You have to laugh through the tears 😭 if energy cannot be destroyed, Obi I hope your energy settles in between a sunbeam and a rainbow so that you might meet your rare match. Please watch over us…

@akinoladaviesjr said the onus is on us to create our own mythologies (another gem from him in the next post!) so I had some thoughts on the city that only dreams and never sleeps. An ode to New York. The grit. The gray. The laughs. The hustle. The excrement, whether animal or otherwise, that seems to be baked into every square inch. The turning nos into yeses. The looks of defiance when fear stares you down. The audacity. The hardest workers alive. (What do you mean you’re not working? What do you mean you’re closed?! Do you want to change your life or not??) The screaming and clawing your way to the top. The crying and throwing up your way to the bottom. The unrelenting pursuit of your best self. The failing up. The failing far. The continuation anyway. I am not from you, and I pledge allegiance that I will never forsake you. The real American dream and the only kind I will ever acknowledge.
