In recent weeks, heavy rains & severe flooding have hit Panjab, causing loss of life to both humans & animals, compounded with destruction to homes & livelihoods. Infrastructure throughout the state has been left in ruin & farms have been left waterlogged.
When the floods first hit, the immediate fear was that families would go without food & essentials. Thanks to the combined efforts of local communities & NGOs/charities, those urgent needs were met. The real challenge now lies in the clear-up. Efforts are underway to clear the flood water & fix the damage. However, the devastation from the floods will take many months to rectify and get people back on their feet again
An area of specific concern is farmland that has been buried under layers of silt & sand once waters recede, meaning farmers cannot replant their crops— their only source of income. Many farmers rent the land they farm, which means that even after losing their crops, they must still pay rent, despite no income
To respond to this,
@humanitet_org began providing diesel for farmers who already have the machinery but simply could not afford to power it. This diesel is being used both to clear farmland & to run mosquito-spraying machines. These machines are very costly to operate, but are vital in preventing potentially deadly outbreaks of dengue fever & malaria.
Humanitet have also committed to helping rebuild as many homes in a village in Gurdaspur. Torrential rain destroyed houses, forcing families to take refuge in the local Gurdwara. Rebuilding is not only about restoring shelter now; it’s also ensuring that families don’t have to evacuate every time the rains come. Each home rebuild costs between £3-4,000 depending on size & needs
We wanted to support these efforts by organising a fundraiser for Humanitet. With thanks to beautiful art by
