If we don’t have safe and accessible abortion access across the US I don’t see any alternatives. So go get those boys fixed before the fall! Providence Daily Journal, vol. LVXIII no. 212, September 3, 1896. #intothebindery
A few manicules for #ManiculeMonday! Ms. Latin Codex 18 “Historia Scholastica” Petrus Comestor, 1303. (Plus bonus image of suture holes in case you forgot that parchment is skin) 😳 #BrownUniversityLibrary #JohnHayLibrary #specialCollections #HistoriaScholastica #PetrusComestor #incunabula #manicule #intothebindery
Dear internet friends, Let’s not dwell on how long it has been since I’ve gotten my hands on anything besides a keyboard and instead let’s admire this tiny precision cotton swab and appreciate the joy that is a brand new crepe eraser. Just doing some quick adhesive removal on the back of this board game so it can be folded back up. It appears that someone else already tried to peel off the double stick tape and damaged the item so I’m leaving the substrate behind and just cleaning off the exposed adhesive. Maybe some future day there will be time to do more, but for now this will suffice!

As it is currently (inappropriately) snowing in Rhode Island despite everyone having already started planning our summer vegetable gardens, I bring you “The Folk-lore of Plants” by T.F. Thiselton Dyer, published in 1889. This well-worn volume discusses the concept that we all descend from the tree of life and, according to the chapter titled Fabulous Plants, lambs grow on stalks like gourds. I personally haven’t seen any Scythian lamb seeds in the heirloom vegetable section of Fedco or Johnny’s catalog, but let me know if you manage to find any.

In honor of the Great Conjunction tonight I present to you the story of a boy, Jimmieboy, who is convinced by his bike, Bikey, to fill its tires with gas from the stove so they can float up to Saturn together... Where they run into a copcycle? Who demands they pay him for a permit to ride? And then they crash into a wall because Bikey doesn’t have any brakes? 🤷🏼 Sorry, but that is as far as I read, you’ll have to look up the rest for yourself.

We cannot remain silent documenters, we cannot pretend to hold ourselves above the fray, we as archivists and curators need to do better. We need to listen and we need to learn, but above all we need to recognize the role of our institutions in perpetuating systemic racism and actively work towards change.
Sorry to traumatize everyone with yesterday’s #PreservationWeek post! Those of us who deal with circulating collections are used to seeing every kind of adhesive available being used to “fix” books. I appreciate the thought behind it, honestly, but we would always prefer you leave it to us to decide what is best! Some times that may be simply putting it in a box or other kind of enclosure and requesting patrons be extra careful. We have to weigh a range of factors including the value of the item and the value of our own time spent, and whether or not it can even withstand being repaired. We are always learning about new materials and different techniques, and what was once acceptable might turn out to be detrimental over time. Ultimately we just want to make our collections available to you and to all our future patrons! #handlewithcare #librarybinding #bookrepair #BrownUniversityLibrary #intothebindery
Please don’t do this.

A dreadful duct tape edition of #tapefrights for #PreservationWeek. This was a circulating book, but due to its age was slated to be transferred to special collections. We were surprised to see that there wasn’t even more damage to the leather, but have yet to attempt removing it from the end sheets... Any words of advice and/or encouragement? #ducttapefixesnothing #tapeisevil #hownottorepairabook #intothebindery
As it is both #tinytuesday and #PreservationWeek, I present to you: the tiniest mat I have ever made! It was crafted to display a single stamp from North Korea commemorating the Non-Proliferation Treaty (three years before they withdrew from it). The @johnhaylibrary has several stamp collections in their own room and they’re actually really cool little works of art. #philately #JohnHayLibrary #BrownUniversityLibrary #savetheusps #matmaking #exhibitprep #intothebindery
Let’s kick off #PreservationWeek with a little #ASMR video! This book is from the circulating collections and had been bound in a simple chain stitch with weak thread causing the text block to split in a few places. After scraping the old glue off and removing the broken thread, I was able to resew the entire book using the same holes but with better materials.

Inspired by @americanantiquarian ’s recent post, here is a similar book safe from our collection! I noticed it immediately while sorting through materials being sent to offsite storage because of how unexpectedly light it was. This was made from of a copy of “Encyclopédie Poétique” by Alexandre Toussaint de Gaigne and is in the Reitman Pharmacopoeia Collection. I wonder what was once hidden inside of it... #JohnHayLibrary #HayAnnex #ReitmanPharmacopoeiaCollection #booksafe #marbledendpapers #encyclopédiepoétique #intothebindery

Like most binderies we are located in the basement (technically the sub-basement) but because the Rockefeller Library is built on a hill it has windows on the back side. At certain times of the year the sun sneaks in like magic. 🔮✨
