Last Thursday (LT) is a kind of restrospective-y nostalgic collaging of art & self, before moving house. I’ve been documenting the in-and-out of Joburg and beyond, through photography and art-making, from the CBD to its Night-life, since 2000. I’m ready to share this work-in-progress, other projects & select B-sides, before my next chapter. • Joburg Thunder showers! Ah that’s iconic! • The process of lustration and its results can be equally dramatic. We see it performed in thunder showers that reveal a lighter, cleaner, more hopeful Joburg after the rain. That reminds us, like the rainbow was supposed to, just how good it can be: a glimpse of a dream Joburg; a vision at once romantic and amnesia inducing. Water is crucial to the health of systems. The study of that system must therefore concern itself with flow. The flow of water, the flow of blood, the flow of emotions…and their undercurrents.

• I’ve been struggling to engage here for some time. I’ve been distracted, thinking about mortality: mine, ours, the worlds. I resigned myself to bearing witness (it’s the least I can do, I know) but I still can’t like, most of the stuff I’m seeing. My saved posts section recalls Ginsbergs’ “America why are your libraries full of tears?” …so many tears, and heartbreak, and violence and shame. My library smells of death.
• I’d like to take this moment though, to applaud all the Greta’s of this world, for all their “stunts” and wish them every success. To all those bodies & voices that still believe in life, encore! And to all those still reminding me there is humanity and beauty out there, thank you so much, it means the world. •
