The definition of Afro-Futurism as it relates to this project is “... a literary and cultural aesthetic that incorporates science fiction and fantasy, magical realism, and non- Western cosmology, appearing in creative works that challenge the racial homogeneity of conventional genre fiction and that explore questions of black identity and subjectivity in futuristic contexts” -Mark Dery. Through her senior capstone entitled CAN U DIG IT?!?!? Amaya explores how AfroFuturism interacts with different styles of music, fashion, and visual art, as well as how Afro-Futurism can be performed as a resistance to systems of oppression.
