Life looks different now…
Coming back to Iowa without you feels like walking through a life we were supposed to keep living together. I wish I would’ve come back sooner, but my heart was shattered into too many pieces, and I was terrified of what it would feel like to stand in the one place where all our memories were still happy. Every gravel road, every open field, every quiet breeze seems to carry your name.
Grandpa Harmon passed away, and I know you would’ve wanted me here. Your grandparents became my own family too. You brought me into a kind of love I had never known before, one rooted in family, generosity, and people who make room for you at the table as if you had always belonged there.
Burying Grandpa felt surreal. My heart aches for Grandma. Watching her grieve made me think about how we too, were supposed to grow old together. That’s how life is supposed to go. But you were gone too soon.
Being back here has flooded me with memories I thought I had lost. They are all beautiful, which somehow makes the ache even heavier without you beside me.
You will always exist within my life in some form, just as I know I still exist within yours. And while heaven took you from me too early, I find comfort knowing you are not alone up there now. One more grandparent to keep you company ❤️
I’m grateful I still have your family. In so many ways, they still feel like home. ❤️
