In celebration of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s 90th Birthday 🎈
The kindness of the Tibetan people has always been humbling, and I will forever be grateful to them.
This journey with Buddhism has been a deeply personal one for two decades now. I remain forever thankful to my Tibetan family for their generosity and for allowing me to be close to this extraordinary being all these years. A Buddha in our midst.
While
@abrahamkunin and I used some of the audio in The Dalai Lama’s album, none of the footage from this interview has ever been shared.
This was filmed in Brussels, in 2016, where he explains why he said yes to making a music album, a reality I still can’t quite process.
@helenung and I had caught the Eurostar from London the night before, arriving in Brussels around midnight, and with the ambitious goal of interviewing His Holiness again since our first recording in 2015. It was also the first time Helen and I had met. She had jumped on a train for this mission, with no guarantees.
At 6.30am the next morning, we bumped into the secretary who thankfully said, “Junelle, good you’re here. You can interview His Holiness in an hour!”
That hour became 40 minutes’ notice, and we were rushed into a room in a completely scattered state. I dropped my things on the table and was trying to organise them, both of us trying to calm ourselves, only to realise His Holiness was already in the room with us, quietly waiting.
We got such a fright. Why didn’t they warn us 😂 Just sent our chaos in there, no chaperones, although in hindsight, grateful for the trust!
Outside of that time on camera, it became one of my favourite memories with him. He was so funny, also kindly easing our nerves. He even arranged the set up and told me where to sit, knowing we were inexperienced.
A massive thank you to
@chloe_gwynne for the last-minute camera equipment and advice.
And to Helen, for leaping into this at the time and recording.
The interview ended up lasting around 45 minutes. His commitment to the work was always so encouraging ❤️
A big heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this work possible. We had the very best team in the world with the kindest hearts 🥰 💕
