Hello everyone, I finally got around to taking some pics of the squigs today after unfortunately getting Covid on the Monday after GD. Almost getting back to normal now thankfully but it's been a rough few days!
Having previously painted the box art version of the Manglers I wanted to really see how far I could push the EM style on a large miniature like this. I also absolutely love this sculpt and just wanted a version to own completely selfishly. Every area of the skin of the squigs is extensively brush blended. I really wanted the red to glow in the cabinet so I deliberately over highlighted into oranges (wildrider, firedragon) and then glazed this back down resulting in a much more vibrant red. Any further refining on the skin was then done with a magnifier and microglazing/stippling. The tongue was a very fun element to paint and if there was any regret that I had about the box art version it was that I didn't really achieve a translucent effect to the saliva. It's a very stylized solution which actually matches the style of the piece and I'm pretty pleased with the overall effect. Towards the end of the project when time was getting tight it was a day well spent! All in it must have taken some 500+ hours to complete the whole project, 12-14 hour painting sessions were the norm in the couple of weeks prior to GD.

Now the dust has settled a bit I've finally had the chance to take some of my own pics of Trugg. I've never had to take pics of something this big so it's proven to be a little tricky, especially with the resin water reflecting lights. Warcom actually did a great job this time around with the images, particularly the resin is free from reflections.
The first few parts of painting this miniature can be found on my Patreon (link in bio) and I'm working on editing the remaining videos for it now.
After that and before starting on the next GD project for Adepticon I am working on a very cool contribution for the eavy-archive which will include quick video tutorials on a few different and popular recipes. So yes the Archive will now have short videos for at least some of the recipes. It's a bit of a trial to see how it goes but hopefully it will be a useful addition to the wonderful & FREE resource that is the Eavy-Archive.com!
GD Essen was such an amazing and unforgettable experience for me not just because I was lucky enough to take home the sword but because I got to meet so many amazing and talented people from our wonderful hobby. Thank you to everyone I got to meet for contributing to such a great event. I would also like to say a special thanks to a painting hero of mine @albert.moreto.font I was lucky enough to see close up his amazing entry and pictures really pale in comparison. To me Alberts incredible skill and dedication to his vision is the peak of display miniatures and on top of that he's a very kind and humble person. Thank you for your support and kindness Albert 🙏

Critter Challenge celebrates another year of incredible entries, and here are just a few snippets from the awards show which was hosted over on Twitch yesterday. I know a lot of you would like to see some of the other incredible entries too (which there were many!) and I'm still trying to sort that out. I found a few work in progress pics on my phone from my Slayer Sword winning entry last year, so I thought I would share them with you all. The piece took many months to complete from designing and sculpting the base in 3d and learning how to do that to negotiating issues with the 3d printer for the first time. Many hundreds of hours were then spent on the painting of Trugg itself. Even just the base took around 2 weeks of solid painting time, blending every rock, stalagmite and fish (I think one ended up in the vacuum cleaner 🤣) Then, attempting the nerve-racking resin pour for the first time. Which actually messed up slightly, and I had to figure out how to fix it! Figuring out how to create the waterfall, which again went through weeks of failed attempts before I eventually got close to the effect I wanted.. Honestly, I feel like the whole project aged me a few years from the stress 😆 I was close to quitting multiple times, but I had invested too much time and energy to not see it through to completion. Planning was essential for a project of this size and towards the end I had the project planned down to the final hours and minutes. Despite multiple dry fits throughout inevitably when it came to assembly he didn't quite fit onto the base as snugly as he should and I was left hastily applying milliput to the gaps in the last minutes before catching a flight the next morning. (Moss pads and tufts can also hide a multitude of sins 😅) The mushrooms sadly were never painted as I ran out of time) After clearing check in and surviving the flight in one piece I was very relieved to get him safely into the cabinet and then enjoy a well earned beer in Essen with some very good friends. I'm very thankful to have such amazing people in my life who help push and motivate me. You know who you are, and I thank you all for being there over the years. I couldn't do it without you ❤️

As well as editing content for new Hellsmiths (skin video imminent), I've also been working on some colour testing for the new maggotkin miniatures following the recent reveals. I'm fairly happy with the results from this quick test although the process and highlights could do with some refinement. A video on the process will be up on the Patreon soon (Link in bio).

I wanted to paint a little critter for our Critter Challenge 2025 and what better way to test out some of these new paints kindly provided by @artisopusltd
I was given 13 paints in total as you can see I mostly used the reds and greens for the skin but also mixing in the beige, white and black to create lighter and more desaturated tones where needed, even using this to paint some of the non metallic where possible. The recipes: Red Squig : Cherry, Pomegranate, Sangria, Papaya, Highlights, Cappuccino, Dove White added, Shading: Soot Black added to Sangria. Goblin Skin: Gherkin, Grass, Green Bottle, Highlights, add Cappuccino and Dove White to Gherkin.
The reds are spectacular and I can't wait to try the others, they are just a joy to work with and are so smooth. The greens are also fantastic I particularly loved working with the Bottle Green a really nice rich and slightly cold dark green (perfect for Dark Angels) the warm mossy green of Gherkin was the perfect tone for the little snotling rider! Overall genuinely very impressed and I can see myself replacing a lot of my go to colours with these. In fact I liked them so much I backed the kickstarter myself!
Massive congratulations to the guys at @artisopusltd and @cultofpaint for a hugely successful kickstarter and beautiful quality product.
