Most buildings ask to be seen. This one asks to be experienced. Set within rural fields in Ningbo, the project replaces abandoned գյուղ structures with something entirely unexpected—architecture that feels soft, responsive, and almost unreal. At first glance, it looks familiar. Containers. Simple forms. գյուղ interventions. But then it shifts. A floating “cloud” creates a shaded café below. A tilted container leans casually, defying its own weight. A reading room hides behind a ring of inflated spheres—entered not through a door, but by pushing your way inside. And that’s where the project reveals itself. This isn’t architecture you pass through passively. It reacts to your body. Inflatable elements—typically temporary—are used here as permanent құрылым, introducing softness where you expect rigidity. The contrast is immediate: steel meets air, weight meets lightness, certainty meets surprise. You don’t just see the space. You test it. Press against a surface—it moves. Lean into it—it responds. Walk through it—it changes your perception of scale and material. Even the construction logic reflects this mindset. Prefabricated containers are reworked, tilted, elevated—while inflatable systems are engineered, tested, and refined to perform beyond their usual limits. The result isn’t a collection of objects. It’s a series of encounters. Between body and material. Between expectation and reality. Between architecture and play. And in that moment of hesitation— when you’re not sure if something is solid or soft— architecture becomes something else entirely. Liang will be teaching a design studio at RMIT this semester. The studio 'Sacred Quarters' explores how contemporary architecture can engage culturally rich contexts shaped by ritual, tradition, and landscape - something we've been thinking deeply about in our recent projects. Working on a remote Himalayan site, students design a solitary retreat while questioning how architecture can enter such places with care, responsibility and intention. #rmit

Down in the Clouds by Practice on Earth (@practiceonearth ) and Increments Studio (@increments.studio ) has won Dezeen Awards 2025 installation design of the year. The design master jury thought that the "collection of structures are beautiful, poetic and stand out in this rural setting." "We love the juxtaposition between hard and soft structures, the industrial and the organic. The project offers simple and fun gestures to transform the landscape."
