Imeh Featured at DC Art Science Evening Rendezvous (DASER) Talk This is a brilliant video summary of the DASER Talk that took place in celebration of my exhibition Monuments to Our Skies at the National Academy of Sciences @thenasciences . To view the full summary video (3:53 min), visit the link in my bio page on Instagram. The conversation was dynamic and powerful; it discussed the concepts of wellness, faith, and healing in the Black community from the intersecting viewpoint of the arts and sciences. The NAS has put together this brilliant 4-minute video summary of the DASER Talk and the official opening of my exhibition. Monuments to Our Skies is on view until July 1st. If you are in the DC area this summer, do stop by to visit. —- #imoimeh #contemporaryart #africanamericanart #africanart #blackwellness #westfieldstate #columbia #columbiaalumni #yalealumni #yale #yaleuniversity @yaleblackalumninetwork

My portrait of Frederick Douglass, which was commissioned by Mechanics Hall in Worcester, Massachusetts, is now on view as part of the Portrait Gallery’s permanent collection. I could not be happier, more amazed, or more humbled by how all of this has come together. To learn more about the Mechanics Hall Portraits Project, visit @mechanicshall or see #linkinbio to read an article about this groundbreaking venture. #imoimeh #mechanicshall #portraitsproject #frederickdouglass

STUDIO IMEH. I am so excited to share with you my portrait of the 19th Century hero Frederick Douglass. The portrait was commissioned by @mechanicshall in Worcester, Massachusetts as part of a mighty initiative called the Portraits Project, an effort to bring to light the stories of Black American luminaries of the 19th Century and their connections to the town of Worcester. This portrait, along with two other stunning portraits of Sojourner Truth, painted by @manu.saluja , and William and Martha Brown, painted by @brenda_zlamany , is now installed in the historic Mechanics Hall Portrait Gallery. These three new works are the first portraits to be commissioned by Mechanics Hall in over a century, and they are the first representations of Black leaders in the institution. There are no words to truly encapsulate exactly how I’m feeling at this moment—but I can tell you with certainty that I am fully aware that this moment is greater than myself, Manu, and Brenda— it’s greater than Mechanics Hall too. It feels spiritual well beyond measure. I can also tell you that no photography of the three portraits will truly demonstrate how intricate or expressive they are. You will need to visit Mechanics Hall to see them for yourselves. The unveiling of the portraits was last night, and it was magical. It was MAGIC! There is more information and photography to come. For now, please enjoy this curated selection of images and videos around the creation of the Frederick Douglass portrait. Please also read the description of the work in the third slide. It offers context for the composition of my painting. This has been one of the most challenging works I’ve been tasked to create in my life as an artist. I feel so much wiser and matured as an artist and thinker for having had this opportunity. Thank you Gloria Hall for your vision, and Mechanics Hall for taking me on this remarkable journey. ❤️🧡💛 Credits: Slide1, Photography, Dean Brown @pulpholyoke Slide 3, Tombstone Description, Jean M. Walked into the Hans Weiss Newspace Gallery at CT State Manchester and stopped in my tracks when I saw his work on the wall. Imo Nse Imeh — I met this man at the Harlem Fine Arts Show and his art got me then too. There's something about seeing an artist you've connected with in one space show up making waves in another. It just feels like confirmation that we're all exactly where we're supposed to be. His large-scale drawings in this show are powerful and unflinching. The kind of work that makes you stand still and really look. The exhibition — "With my pencil, I wrote myself into being" — features four artists in conversation with Percival Everett's Pulitzer Prize winning novel James. It's about agency, identity, and whose stories get told. Go see it if you're in the Manchester, CT area. It's free. This is why I go to art shows. This is why I think you should too. Most are free, all are enriching, and you never know who you'll run into or what will move you. Support living artists. Show up for each other. It matters. @imoimeh @harlemfinearts @ctstatemanchester

Artist Talk, Fairfield Art Museum (@fairfielduam ) Thursday, April 23 @ 5:30 pm. Fairfield, Connecticut. THIS EVENT IS THIS THURSDAY. — I have been asked by the Fairfield Art Museum to give an Artist Talk that contextualizes my painting “and i’ll be there with you” in the larger scope of our considerations around the American Flag. This painting is currently in the exhibition “For Which It Stands,” which celebrates and interrogates the American Flag from a number of viewpoints. I am honored to be displaying my work with so many notable artists in American history: Faith Ringgold, Dread Scott, Jasper Johns, Gordon Parks, Glenn Ligon—this is amazing to me. What will I speak about? Well, I could discuss the title of my painting, “and i’ll be there with you,” which is actually a quote from Donald Trump, right before the 2021 Capitol Riots (spoiler alert, he wasn’t there with them); or I could address the appearance of the main figure, who is in a “pieta” pose, but whose limp body is being held up by spears instead of outstretched arms. I mean, I’ll definitely talk about things—there are things to discuss! Come through. See you Thursday in Fairfield, Connecticut. —- Featured image: “and i’ll be there with you,” 2021, charcoal, India ink, and fabric on canvas, 84 x 108 inches
