Waste, Reuse, Survival brings together justice‑impacted artists whose practices emerge from conditions of scarcity, restraint, and environmental neglect in collaboration with artists Tega O. @tega_okperuvwe and Yudith Azareth @lacasafrijol at the intersection of eco art and social practice, revealing how ingenuity thrives even under conditions meant to suppress it. Jamie Albert @ace.artsinitiative will also be speaking about and paying homage to the late reclaimed material builder Dan Phillips and his cultural influence in Huntsville.
These artists remind us that some of the most radical forms of eco art are born not from abundance, but from constraint—and that resilience itself is a renewable resource.
As part of our upcoming waste reclaiming exhibit, we encourage the donation of recyclable or reusable material such as cardboard, colored glass, fabric and other materials for repurposing as artistic ingredients.
Come join us May 23 at The Be Free Gallery from 6-9pm and learn about art under constraint ⛓️💥🎨🌎

♾️Going on for the last 6 months this class is my passion, showing people how to find the way back to themselves through breath, movement and community. It has been free up to this point. Why am I now adding a “suggested donation”?
♾️ In my experience when someone knows something is free they automatically assume low quality. I pour my heart and soul into each of these unique classes that I intuitively design based on my own state, the state of the world, and the state of the people that support this work.
♾️ No matter how the class turns out, there’s a common feedback of “that was so relaxing”, “ I feel like I had an hour massage” “I needed that so much”
♾️ If you’re struggling in any way come to this unique class and let’s release some 💩 and find your way back to radical self love again.
♾️ $15 suggested donation but of course if you truely need the medicine and cannot afford it, you will not be turned away.
♾️ Suggested items to bring for your experience:
Water bottle, yoga mat, blanket and pillow if desired.

It was an honor and a privilege to be asked by Windham School District, a school district of TDCJ, to speak to High School Equivalency, Career and Technical Education & Apprenticeship students at a graduation ceremony. I’m very proud of these students of not only being a student of life, but of being a student of academia. It’s not easy to hold principles in an unprincipled and stressed environment. These human beings are making a conscious effort to improve themselves and I commend them for it! 🎓💯🔥
I want to thank the WSD faculty and staff for the invite and Warden Burks for having Dr. Godwin and I there to support these individuals who are defining their boundaries and not allowing their boundaries to define them ⛓️💥

IMERJ x SHSU MFA…I was caught by surprise when MFA social practices students @social_practicetx proposed to do an exhibition called “Hate Fest” at Be Free Gallery. At first even I didn’t know what to think, but then they laid the plan out to me and how it’s about approaching it from a creative angle. It’s easy to dismiss hate as irrational—but hate is learned, practiced, and rewarded. And if it’s learned, it can be confronted. Where does hate come from? Who benefits from it? And what does it cost us all? At Imerj, we believe art isn’t just expression—it’s evidence. Evidence that marginalized people think deeply, feel fiercely, and contribute meaningfully, even under extreme conditions. This helped even myself to understand hate from a way I never thought to, I spent half my life living with hate in a destructive manner, hate created from the wicked acids of institutionalism or prison system. I never thought about a creative side to it. Understanding hate creatively is one way we dismantle it. ⛓️💥🔥🎨🎸🤘🏽
Special thanks to SHSU Live @hville_live and our young prodigy for the entertainment!!

Welcome to the Be Free Gallery, home of @imerjart .
This is not just any space, but a place with incredible purpose. This is a place filled with inspiration.
Daniel Celaya began his non-profit, @imerjart , just over a year ago, and since the beginning, he has been a change maker within the art scene - representing many artists who are currently and formerly incarcerated.
Having been in a similar place to those he represents, he hopes this promotion and advocacy will inspire others in difficult circumstances to dream big, work hard, and trust that things can - and do - get better.
As Daniel puts it: “The mission is clear. Educate the public, showcase talent, and help the forgotten during and post-incarceration.”
We’ve enjoyed seeing the meaningful connections that Imerj has already made with many community members, as well as with @shsuart students and faculty. We look forward to working collaboratively and assisting with capacity building, website development, and more. There are many opportunities for mutually beneficial partnerships!
P.S. Daniel is also a @samhoustonstate Bearkat student! #EatEmUpKats
