Love how our A&SP art residency in the Lloyd Center Mall found its way into a New York Times article about visiting Portland this week. They link to a great article that talks about this revitalized ‘dead mall’, shares some of our work, and quotes me reminiscing about 1990’s Pittsburgh and the Brew House @brewhousearts . The project took place last year as part of our Art & Social Practice MFA program. Our class met weekly at the mall as ‘resident artists’ for what we call ‘Experientials’ where we learn by doing. We mapped the soft spots or the places were we might grow projects, we created personal movement pieces with @dchaseangier , and we got to know our mall neighborhood. The mall became our host for that years’ Assembly and the public joined us to experience so many amazing projects! From a beautiful chance to wish together at a fountain @gilnotjill , a live interview show by @manfredpunky , a color wheel swap shop @all_corndogs_go_to_heaven , @liv__bliss extraordinary fashion show, @simeenasknownbyyou place for public resting, @nvichayapai ’s store of regret, @midori ’s conversations caligraphy, Lou’s @8loub install and creation of a temporary all gender restroom and my own and @kyealive mall walk with a twist! (And I mean the orchestrated surprise ice-skating duet in the middle of it!) I am not doing these amazing projects justice here! Love what we made together! @psuartandsocialpractice @psu_artanddesign @psu_arts @psu_artpractice @psu_arts @psu_core

Michelle Swinehart and I took a field trip to OSU’s Little Bird Lab yesterday to visit and ‘do’ some science with Dr. Jamie Cornelius. In September Michelle and I became Artists in Residence of the @cornelius_littlebirdlab and spent 2 weeks @pinemeadowranch to kick off our collaboration with Jamie. We joined a teaching and lab session, saw the slides we got from the field under a microscope, met the birds and animals, visited the gallery at the amazing PRAx @oregonstateprax . (Great show @michael.boonstra @garricki ) We also brainstormed about our next project … more about that to come! Wonderfully fun day! @psuartandsocialpractice @psu_artanddesign @psu_artpractice @illuminato #osuartscience #artsciencecollaboration #littlebirdlabart #socialpracticescience

A Garden is An Event … is similar to a CSA! You receive a dinner (stone-themed!) as well as an artwork, plant, reader… and a napkin and rock salt this time around! Loved planning this with Rory @rorysparks ! 1. A box with sun and moon: a Sunstone, Oregon’s state gem stone, and Moon dust direct from the moon, with a certificate of authenticity hidden inside! 2. A Living Stone plant, also known as Lithops in a tiny pot. 3. A reader filled with excerpts and bits of inspiration- Pebbles on the Beach by Clarence Ellis, a dictionary of lesser-used stone words from Landmarks by Robert MacFarlane and more! A stone-appliquéd dinner napkin and a pink salt rock ! #stonedinner #stone soup #agardenisanevent #stonesrock #stoneart

Last Saturday, Rory Sparks and I put on stone themed dinner-art- garden event! It was part of Rory’s A Garden is an Event… and included a four course stone-themed dinner including stone-looking antipasti, a deconstructed stone soup, roast pork (yes, it looked like rocks but was tasty and soft!) and veggie tamales, tons of veggies and a dessert plate of more stone shaped treats from tiny macaroons, 2 types of brownies, stone candy, truffles and chocolate pop rocks! We asked folks to bring a rock that has meaning and at one point we shared the stories around the table. I was touched by the beauty of the stories (and of the rocks that came from near to far in place and time!). We created an artwork for each person (I’ll post that next), a stone napkin, a plant, and a reader to take home! A full and special night! 1. Folks getting settled at the table! 16 people, stones to eat and stones to marvel at. 2. The reader. 3. It’s butter! 4. Intermission and gathering our stones. 5. Set up for naming your stone. 6. Stone table beginnings 7. Favorite Stone, a tool! 8. Stone collected in the sea 9. Stone fruit 10. Stone soup 11. Stone plants 12. Salt rocks 13. Salt 🪨 , rocks! Sara loved it! Haha Thanks for all the help, a special thanks to ms. Molly! @rorysparks @illuminato @illuminato_studio #sunstonesandmoondust #stones #stonemeal #stonesoup
