Diaspora Issues 🇯🇲🌍
Lately I’ve noticed something troubling — many native-born Jamaicans don’t claim the Diaspora.
Outside of Jamaica, people of Jamaican heritage are seen as Jamaican because of the culture, traditions, and values passed down. But within Jamaica, there’s often this idea that “if you’re born in England, you’re English. If you’re born in America, you’re American.”
This creates a divide. Yes, there’s a difference between being born and raised in Jamaica vs. abroad. But should that difference mean disconnection? Should it mean isolation?
Other cultures embrace their people wherever they’re born. Why does it feel like Jamaicans sometimes don’t? 🤔
Diaspora isn’t just distance — it’s still belonging.
