VOGUE INTERVIEW: By Mark Holgate @markholgatenyc Mr. Holgate is Vogue’s Fashion News Director at Conde Nast @voguemagazine . Being interviewed by him was so wonderful. Felt like we’d known each other the longest time, like boarding school old boys, as it were. Link to Vogue interview: /article/ike-ude-interview-may-2025 We covered a whole range of subjects—some in details, some breezily but poignantly touched upon. Mark asked me to single out my favorite of over 60-something aphorisms that augmented and formed part of the Epilogue that I wrote for the “Superfine”, exhibition’s book, for the @metcostumeinstitute , The Costume Institute. I don’t have a singular favorite, but the one below ranks relatively high amongst them: “What narcotic savor, the caresses of a silk collar shirt on the neck. What scandalous sweetness, as the hands slip through the near-haughty sleeves of a dry-cleaned cotton shirt. What delicious shiver, what reverie, what dream, still, as the legs find their ways through the incorrigible, communicable, suave sensations of cashmere trousers, or one’s aroused cheeks repeatedly dabbed, with such tenderness, on the sleeves of a velvet jacket. These are but a few of the 1,001 pleasures of dressing.” To which, Mr. Holgate added, “Well, it’s interesting to consider an internalized experience of what we wear versus the idea of external appearances, with all that that can convey…” re: Music, Debussy, Arabesque No. 1 Claude Debussy was a composer whose music I obviously love. Not least, because of his open mindedness. That is to say, his encounter with Javanese, Polynesian “gamelan music” at the 1889 Paris World’s Fair, that radically changed his musical language, musical style and was fundamental, immeasurably foundational in the actualization of his mature compositional style. Always wise to keep one’s ear to the ground, to not be prejudiced and remain invariably openminded. Singular, rarified inspirations or creative ideas can issue from unexpected geographies and epochs. #art #portrait #painting #photographer #love #fashion #style #photoshoot #dandy #vogue #superfine #costumeinstitute

ARTFORUM “TOP TEN”, by Iké Udé, November, 2025 For those not in the know about the art world, a cursory google glance states that “Artforum is a prominent international monthly magazine specializing in contemporary art and widely considered the ‘magazine of record’ and a foremost tastemaker for the contemporary art world”. @artforum Thus, it was such an honor to be commissioned by the venerable art publication to author the 2025, Artforum's Top Ten* feature, an annual series published once a year in late autumn. To both the readers of ArtForum and novices alike, enjoy the Top Ten and be sure to fetch a copy of the smartly designed, beautifully bound print version, chock-full of contents and savor it in full. The assignment was relatively straightforward: ArtForum asked me to compile a list of ten of my favorite (and preferably art-related) things, writing some sentences on each item explaining why it has intrigued or stayed with me. A few of my entries may initially seem farther afield, yet squarely within my sphere of aesthetic and artistic sympathies. #artist #artsy #arts #artistic #artlovers #artesanato #artworld #artwork #artoftheday #artlife

Colman Domingo @kingofbingo is one of those rare, gifted thespians, such as Sidney Poitier, Dirk Bogarde, who are uniquely and keenly aware that the camera can read thoughts. As such, their performances in front of the camera are profoundly infused with palpable, infectious, readable thoughts. Unlike some of the insufferable, so-called Hollywood celebrity types, Domingo is the genuine article. At all times, he’s himself—a gentleman, sensitive to other people’s sensitivities, kind, observant, a marvelous quick study and possesses that rarefied missing commodity in Hollywood, that is to say, there’s no false note about him, at any rate. Colman Domingo is an American actor, playwright, and director. He is well known and highly esteemed on both screen and stage since the 2010s, Domingo has received various accolades, including a Primetime Emmy Award, and nominations for two Academy Awards and two Tony Awards. Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2024. He served as one of the four co-chairs for this year’s MET gala. . . . . Domingo received consecutive nominations in 2023 and 2024 for the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayals of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin in the biopic Rustin and a prison inmate named John "Divine G" Whitfield in the drama Sing Sing. Vogue @voguemagazine commissioned me to do five portraits of him, including its May cover, with additional corresponding details of each of the portraits.1st slide, clothes by @dolce &gabbans; 2nd slide, clothes by @Ozwald_Boateng ; 3rd and 4th slides, clothes by @ysl , 5th slide, clothes by @Balmain . Stylist @maxortegag ; @jackibrowngrooming ; grooming @jam_rich Best kept secret: Colman is an AMAZING singer! Can't wait for his singing debut, some great actors such as Marlene Dietrich were great singers. #art #portrait #painting #photographer #love #fashion #style #photoshoot #dandy

This year, late last month, April, I found myself crowned, by The New York Times’ @nytstyle as “America’s Premier Living Dandy” but a dandy who “doesn’t want the title.” It was as stunning and as humbling an experience. I had to let the whole thing cool off for a while before fully reckoning and/or acknowledging it. Crowned as the Premier Living American dandy is fabulous, I, however, value praise or damnation with equanimity. Text wise, Professor Rhonda Garelick @rhondagarelick did a terrific job of it, writing in a rather accessible manner, unlike in the semiotic language academics usually indulge in and that requires doses of Aspirin or Advil to process even a single sentence and good luck tackling a paragraph or trudging through whole page, my fondness for semiotics notwithstanding. (And Alas, these conspicuously opaque academic texts, illuminate nothing extraordinary). Amongst Prof. Garelick’s books that I highly recommend, are, “Rising Star: Dandyism, Gender, and Performance in the Fin de Siècle” and “Coco Chanel and the Pulse of History”. A cute, little anecdote: none other than @amyfinecollinsibdl , during one of our conversations, once described Prof. Rhonda as having a huge brain. Yes, she does and we approve! The last slide of this post has a summary of Prof. Garelick’s bio. (Just as well, Rhonda lovingly evoked, in her article, my portrait of the great thespian, Colman Domingo @kingofbingo , for the May, @voguemagazine cover, The Met Issue). I would be remiss if I didn’t especially thank Christy Harmon, @christyyyyk Photo Editor at The New York Times, for her fine eye in curating the accompanying photos/images that ran with Rhonda’s text. Ms. Harmon also astutely picked the amiably wonderful, young photographer, Andre D. Wagner to photograph me, at my Chelsea studio. re: excerpt “Style is always as timeless as tomorrow, because style is triumphantly unfashionable beyond the purview of fashion”. Excerpted from the commissioned epilogue essay that I wrote for “Superfine” @metcostumeinstitute , the Metropolitan Museum of Art. #dandy #dandyism #TheMet #MetGala #Vogue #lordbyron #oscarwilde #beaubrummell

Greetings everyone! Please pardon the long absence, since 2022. And what fabulous way to return and resume activities on IG, than with doing the Vogue cover, a portrait of the great thespian, Colman Domingo @kingofbingo . Thank you immeasurably, Dame Wintour and Vogue @voguemagazine for this wonderful opportunity. So honored. Colman, boasts, in equal measures, a thinking and feeling actor/playwright, and a dream personage to work with, in the actualization of his historic portraits. . . I’d be terribly remiss if I didn’t thank Raúl Martinez, Vogue’s veteran and Global Creative Director and Maestro who not only evoked, within me, but became the equivalent of my Sergei Diaghilev, the impresario and founder of Ballet Russes. I became his Vaslav Nijinsky and him, my Diaghilev. What wondrous impossibilities made possible. .. Will be sharing more portraits of our most dearest and beloved thespian, Colman, in the coming days, and weeks to come, in a slower, piecemeal dosages and pace, governed by my rather retiring, artistic temperament. .. Below, excerpt from the aphorisms, part of the epilogue that I’d authored for the forthcoming, “Superfine, Tailoring Black Style,” exhibition catalogue of The MET Costume Institute @metcostumeinstitute : . “When the presence of a style becomes tantamount to an atmosphere, stoked and charged with potent emotional import, you are possibly looking at a momentous, spellbinding sartorial fourth wall, or more.” . . . . Mr. Domingo possess something of this nature. . . Thank you all and be well! —iké @voguemagazine . Art by: Iké Udé // @ikeude .. Iké Udé: Nollywood Portraits, Smithsonian, National Museum of African Art, Washington, DC. February 5, 2022 – February 28, 2023 … . . "Multimedia artist Iké Udé celebrates the luminescent beauty and mystique of African visionaries by turning his lens on the talented people who drive Nollywood, Nigeria’s $3 billion film industry. Known for his performative, iconoclastic style and vibrant sense of composition, Udé’s photographs use color, attire and other markers to make elegant yet unexpected portraits. His photographs make a bold statement about the power of African identities, despite centuries of attempted erasure by Eurocentric art history and notions of beauty." . . “Nollywood is the new face of Africa: it is modern, postmodern, bold, sexy, wicked, shrewd and with a contagious attitude worth catching.” —iké udé, 2016 . . EXHIBITION/ IKÉ UDÉ: SELECT PORTRAITS NSU ART MUSEUM, FORT LAUDERDALE, FL. On view: April 4th, 2021, through Jan. 9, 2022 /exhibition/ike-ude-select-portraits/ Iké Udé’s color-saturated conceptual photography brings a new vitality to contemporary portraiture as it addresses notions of identity, representation and aspects of performance. The innovative work of this Nigerian-born, New York-based artist is now at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale in the exhibition Iké Udé: Select Portraits. On view from April 4, 2021 through January 9, 2022, the exhibition includes self-portraits from the artist’s Sartorial Anarchy series, portraits of key figures from Nigeria’s Nollywood film industry, as well as additional recent portraits of personages drawn from the artist’s circle. .. . . Referencing both the history of classical painting and elements of contemporary culture, the Sartorial Anarchy series features Udé dressed in varied costumes that transcend time and geography. The images explore a range of dualities such as photographer/performance artist, artist/spectator, mainstream/marginal and fashion/art. Conversant in the worlds of fashion and celebrity, Udé melds his own theatrical selves and multiple personas in his art, viewing articles of clothing and adornments as collective markers of varying epochs. The Nollywood portraits are a visual celebration of African culture and the vibrant contemporary film industry in Nigeria that ranks only second to Hollywood in global prominence. The photographic portraits complement the discourse on the representation of Africans in cinema, from one of colonial domination and demeaning stereotypes to one of intellect and creative agency in telling their stories. Also in the exhibition are striking newer portraits of famed Turkish jeweler Sevan Bıçakçı, financier and art patron Lesley Goldwasser, and entrepreneur Benjamin Harris Milstein. NSU Art Museum recently acquired two portraits by Iké Udé for its permanent collection. . . @nsuartmuseum #portraiture #beautiful #loveyou #selfportrait #museum #instagram #igdaily #follow #webstagram #color #igers #fashion #hautecouture #nollywood @leilahellergallery
