IIT (ISM) Dhanbad successfully inaugurated a two-day National Workshop on “Digital Repository using Open Source Software (DSpace)” at the Golden Jubilee Lecture Theatre on April 27, 2026.
The inaugural session was graced by Director Prof. Sukumar Mishra, who highlighted the importance of digitisation and emerging technologies in redefining the role of libraries in today’s knowledge-driven world.
Prof. Ajay Mandal (PIC, Central Library) welcomed the dignitaries and participants, while Librarian Partha De outlined the objectives of the workshop. Dr. B. Sutradhar (NDLI, IIT Kharagpur) encouraged active engagement and emphasised the role of national digital initiatives in expanding access to knowledge.
Deputy Librarian Satish Kumar was also present on the dais, and the session was anchored by Assistant Librarian Sourav Debnath.
The workshop will provide participants with hands-on training on DSpace, including repository architecture, metadata standards, content submission workflows, and best practices in digital preservation.

Advancing Digital Knowledge Ecosystems through Collaboration!
IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, in collaboration with the National Digital Library of India at IIT Kharagpur, is set to host a National Workshop on DSpace as part of its Centenary Celebrations.
This initiative reflects a shared commitment towards strengthening institutional digital repositories and empowering academic communities with open, accessible knowledge systems.
We encourage library professionals, faculty, and institutional representatives to take part in this meaningful capacity-building engagement.
IIT (ISM) Dhanbad successfully conducted a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) outreach programme at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV), Jharia, engaging around 250 students from Project Affected Persons (PAP) families and underprivileged backgrounds.
Organised in collaboration with Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) under its CSR initiative, the programme focused on fostering scientific temper, enhancing conceptual clarity, and promoting analytical thinking through experiential learning. Students actively participated in hands-on experiments such as Balloon Blow-Up, Candle Water Rising, Turmeric Indicator, Elephant Toothpaste, Density Layering, Light Refraction, and Lava Lamp, enabling them to connect theoretical concepts with real-life applications.
Led by faculty members from the Department of Management Studies and Industrial Engineering, the initiative reflects IIT (ISM)’s continued commitment to inclusive education, community engagement, and capacity building in coalfield regions.
