Such an honour to have curated this year’s Budapest Select exhibition, under the aegis of
@creativehungary at Milan Design Week 2026.
Thank you to everyone involved in bringing the exhibition to life, to the artists and designers who contributed their works to the exhibition, and to all of you who came to see the show in person / followed the events online.
Patterns of Being is a curatorial project that explores the role of humans in shaping the world through the intersections of design and art. The exhibition presents the reflections of contemporary Hungarian creators across five thematic sections, responding sensitively to cultural, social, ecological, and material‑ and form‑related challenges. The selected artists and designers offer works that not only hold aesthetic value but also carry intellectual depth: exploring the possibilities of material use, the memory embedded in form, cultural heritage, the reinterpretation of craft and industrial traditions, the relationship between humans and nature, and questions of ethical responsibility.
The central material of the spatial design (by
@vu.architects ) is reed (Phragmites australis), an archetypal element of Hungarian material culture and architecture. Found in the wetlands around Lake Balaton and across the Great Hungarian Plain, this naturally renewable material has been used for centuries in roofing, structural elements, and everyday objects, symbolizing the harmonious relationship between people and the landscape.
