Loving an Ada means understanding that she learned very early that love often looked like responsibility.
So sometimes:
* she overfunctions
* she struggles to ask for help
* she carries things alone
* she says āIām fineā when sheās exhausted
Not because she doesnāt trust you.
But because sheās used to being the one people depend on.
Many first daughters were taught how to care for everyone else before they were taught how to receive care themselves.
So loving an Ada means:
* reassuring her
* softening her survival mode
* reminding her she doesnāt always have to carry everything alone
Because even the strong ones deserve rest.

In Igbo tradition, a first daughter never truly leaves her fatherās house.
Marriage may take her elsewhere, but her identity remains rooted in where she comes from.
She is: ⢠the bridge between families ⢠the one who returns home when things must be settled ⢠the daughter whose voice is heard in matters that affect the lineage
In some communities, Ada can: ⢠speak in family meetings ⢠stand for her fatherās household ⢠be present in decisions that shape the familyās future
Her role is both emotional and cultural. Personal and symbolic. She carries her fatherās name not just in identity, but in responsibility.
Wherever she goes, she is still tied to the soil that raised her. She is not just married into another home.
She remains Ada of her fatherās house.

In Igbo culture, the first daughter is called Ada.
But Ada is more than a title.
It is a role.
A responsibility.
A quiet expectation that begins long before she understands it.
She is: ⢠the one who steps in when things fall apart ⢠the one everyone calls when thereās a problem ⢠the one who carries what others cannot
She learns early how to: ⢠hold things together ⢠read the room ⢠sacrifice without being asked
Sometimes, she becomes a second mother.
Sometimes, she becomes the emotional anchor of the home.
Sometimes, she becomes the strong one because there is no other option.
And while everyone praises her strength, very few people see the weight behind it.
Sometimes, she grows up faster than she should.
Sometimes, she becomes strong before she is ready.
Sometimes, she doesnāt even realize she had a choice.
And most timesā¦
no one asks how sheās doing.
No one asks what she gave up.
No one asks what she carries when sheās alone.
This is what it means to be Ada.

DEAR MOTHER; A postpartum journey documentary.
While directing this documentary, I got to understand the sacrifices and pains mothers go through for the family especially during and after pregnancy. Also watching a close person go through this phase, I can't help but deepen my soft spot for ladies.
Dear Mother is one of those stories you'd love to hear. (Link in my bio)
Thanks to all the mothers who poured out their hearts in this documentary.
Directed by @ify.chuks
