From a flirting robot, through a mechanical scoreboard, to a game you can’t win against a cheating machine —explore bold, playful interactive projects built by our Innovation Design Engineering students! 🤖🎯
To mark International Design Day, we are excited to share a new video from our
@idecourse – run jointly with the
@royalcollegeofart – showcasing student projects from the Cyber Physical Systems module.
Over six weeks, students were tasked with building interactive systems that integrated machine learning with mechanical engineering, with the choice of application, context, and output left to them.
What they built reflects what makes IDE distinctive: a cohort that brings together engineers, designers, scientists, and makers from around the world, each bringing a different perspective to the same challenge. Watch our students turn an open brief into bold, interactive systems and see what happens when engineering rigour meets creative thinking.
This project would not be possible without the generous support of
@thedesigneducationtrust via Trustee, Alec Robertson. The module was led by Dr Rebecca Stewart, alongside Andrew Brand, Oisin Shaw, Melissa Coleman, and Peter Childs.

We are also happy to share that our IDE students received major prizes at INTERPLAY25, the Design Education Trust's design competition. Congratulations to Ewan Atkinson (LOOK) and Haoyue Si, Jingyi Miao, and Paul Marçais (SOFT GARDEN) on securing the Major Awards in the competition!
