From a flirting robot, through a mechanical scoreboard, to a game you can’t win against a cheating machine —explore bold, playful interactive projects built by our Innovation Design Engineering students! 🤖🎯 To mark International Design Day, we are excited to share a new video from our @idecourse – run jointly with the @royalcollegeofart – showcasing student projects from the Cyber Physical Systems module. Over six weeks, students were tasked with building interactive systems that integrated machine learning with mechanical engineering, with the choice of application, context, and output left to them. What they built reflects what makes IDE distinctive: a cohort that brings together engineers, designers, scientists, and makers from around the world, each bringing a different perspective to the same challenge. Watch our students turn an open brief into bold, interactive systems and see what happens when engineering rigour meets creative thinking. This project would not be possible without the generous support of @thedesigneducationtrust via Trustee, Alec Robertson. The module was led by Dr Rebecca Stewart, alongside Andrew Brand, Oisin Shaw, Melissa Coleman, and Peter Childs. 🎥 Videography: Digital Media Lab at Imperial College London We are also happy to share that our IDE students received major prizes at INTERPLAY25, the Design Education Trust's design competition. Congratulations to Ewan Atkinson (LOOK) and Haoyue Si, Jingyi Miao, and Paul Marçais (SOFT GARDEN) on securing the Major Awards in the competition! 📹 Watch the INTERPLAY25 trailer and learn more about the competition: /watch?v=ymWFscuKYYo #InternationalDesignDay #DesignEngineering #Creativity

No two IDE students are the same — and that’s the point 👀🌿 Different backgrounds. Different perspectives. Different ways of making sense of the world. How do we start a project in IDE? Here is how our second-year students kicked off their group project with a creative, speculative workshop designed to help them understand themselves, each other, and how they work best together 🤝💭 Thank you to our wonderful host @grymsdykefarm Because great ideas don’t come from everyone thinking the same. ⁉️Thinking of applying to IDE? Come as you are. Curiosity required. 👋 In-person Open days at the RCA on the 31st of January 2026. 🗓️ Admissions Round 1 closes 19th January 🔗 Link in bio for more information

CoNex: Making cobot an intuitive partner for the next era of creation We believe that over the next decade robots will not replace humans but become true partners. Although humans and cobots now share workspaces, they still behave like separate agents... CoNex is an innovative symbiotic system that maps real-world movement into a virtual environment so they both operate in a unified spatial model in real time, building dynamic safety boundaries, enabling mutual communication and reducing cognitive load to shape a future ecosystem of human–robot collaboration! @jennifer.w.y.y @yuyii.yang @changlily2001 @wuxiangnan2024

For millions of people worldwide, Gambling is a fun and competitive activity. However, the risk of this becoming a compulsion or addiction is surprisingly high. #BigFinance, #BigTech, #BigAdvertising all spend billions on making #gambling more enticing. Regulation & Health services can’t keep up. It is rapidly becoming a leading issue of the decade. Say hello to LeveL. It requires very little setup or user interaction. It works seamlessly in the background to provide the right support when necessary. 🍀 A new way of safeguarding gambling. 🤩 A companion that works without judgment. 🎰 Discreet, effective and evidence based. isaacigb @christianabbott @small.louis_

CLOVER: The dual filtration pod combatting wildfire smoke. Wildfires are increasing in the UK and beyond the fire line, wildfire smoke is toxic and harmful to human health. The general lack of guidance and awareness means local communities are not taking necessary precautions to protect themselves. CLOVER is mechanically wind-powered, always improving air quality, without any electrical components. Its dual filtration, comprised of mechanical & biodegradable components, captures and digests harmful particles found in wildfire smoke. 4 CLOVER pods are combined together into ‘The Stem’ providing access to zones of cleaner air in affected communities. The Stem is able to filter 73,800 m3/day, equivalent to 85% of the Royal Albert Hall’s volume. @franci.dc @savelanna @jude_muchen @jacobkrakowianadams #greendesign #wildfiresmoke #airpollution

*Soil Kitchen: placing kitchen care into our soils" For every microplastic found in water streams, there are 23 sinking in our soils, and urban allotments represent the greatest hotspots. Using wind-powered, electricity-free tools inspired by kitchen tools, we preprocess compost to capture harmful microplastics, restore soil's structure, and return cleaner material back to the ground. Soil Kitchen aims to empower communities, allotments, and gardeners to take action in caring for their soil, batch by batch. In this context, the design runs electricity free, powered entirely by wind, making it the first solution to remove microplastics from the soil they grow with. Built for neighbours, growers, and anyone who believes in collective care for the land, Soil Kitchen marks the beginning of a new era of grassroots, wind-driven environmental tools. @_.into.the.unknown._ @ally_blah_blah @currrrrrro
