A good design is not merely a beautiful sketch or a pretty render. There is a great deal of work behind it to ensure that a product generates value beyond its graphic representation. It requires a solid strategy, a well-thought-out conceptualization, and a thorough research. And, in my experience, these are aspects that can only be achieved hand-in-hand with a great team.
